I'm in the process of building a Twisted Hobbies Crack Turbo Beaver and thought Id share some info on it.

I have been been listening to the RC today Show for a few years and in the last year Cody Wojcik, one of the designers and representatives for Twisted Hobbies, has appeared as a co-host and always talked about the Crack Beaver along with their other models,it sounded great fun.

The bad weather here and work has kept me from flying helis so through boredom and keen for something to build I finally gave in and bought one.
It was £53.95 for the EPP airframe and £29 for a T-Motor AT2206 1500kv, 9 x 4.7 prop and a MayTech Harrier-eXTrem 12A ESC.
I bought some HKSCM9-6 10 gram servos too,they were around £2 each!
The batterys I orderd are 2s 450 mah. It can be configured to 3s with a change of prop.

Im using UHU Por, welders glue equivalent, to glue everything. It takes ages to cure fully so I will go for welders glue or hot glue next time.
Airframe and power combo came from http://www.electricwingman.com and the servos from HK UK.

Chris Jewett co-designed the Beaver and has a great build video.

Here's the manual

Here are some cool examples of the fun to be had with this plane. It has the look of a bush plane and is unorthodox looking for a 3D capable plane but looks brilliant to fly as well as being a great inspiration for some beaver jokes.

Just search Crack turbo beaver on youtube and you will find an endless amount of cool videos.

I will post more pictures and videos as the build progresses and weather improves.

Let the beaver jokes commence!

Never thought Id be flying planes again until I gave into this one, they have lots of cool models. They can be economically build too.
Check out the videos and you may become addicted to the beaver too!

The twisted hobbies range are supposed to be fantastic 3d trainers, you will have great fun with it.
Are you going to venture into plank 3d Cam?

Yeah Dan, just giving it a go. Lack of space means I wont go big for a while but this looks very capable. Take off and landing can be done in very little space.
If I get hooked I would love a big petrol engine 3D plane.
Definitely still flying helis. Flying the plane might open up my heli flying a bit too.

I haven't given up on this plane. I wish I made a build thread to get some advice from the plane guys. Ive never had luck with planes and this was no different. I think I made it too heavy with glue which made setting CG difficult and I think it may be lacking power due to the weight.

Also it is super agile and twitchy without Expo, think I'm at 40 or 50 on Aileron.
I did have a successful, sort of, couple of flights and am keen to build another after I destroy this one learning. Hope to get a video over the weekend and next time Ill make a build thread.

Higher expo is pretty common with this type of plane. Higher expo is almost demanded if you have full throws on your ailerons. You can always set your dual rates down a bit more. I'd be very interested to see some flight video...maybe I can give you some suggestions then.

Ill get on it Derek, thanks. Need to glue and reinforce some bits then video time. Hopefully this weekend.

I just had a harder look at the PDF manual for this plane. Dude....I may have to scratch build one of these for myself. I already have the motor, esc, several light weight servos, and a receiver. I'll have to order some small 2S and 3S packs. The smallest pack that I have is a 3S 800mah and its much bigger than anything that was suggested. I have plenty of foam board..just need a bit of carbon fiber for reinforcement....hmmmm. I bet this would be a fun little flyer!!!

Hey there's no excuse not to now! lol, you have all the electronics and foam board.
That would be impressive and interesting to see you build one, just a really fun plane from the little I've managed to fly it.
I know my skills are lacking in the scratch build and plane arena so look forward to seeing how its done.

planes are easy to fly compared to heli's and scratch building isn't that hard, i'm sure Derek would help you out with techniques if you fancied a go, it would make for an awesome thread.

Once I'm all done with my Velocity 50 build, I'll work on a scratch build Crack Turbo Beaver. I'll try to document as much as I can.

Cameron....if you have any questions about your plane..maybe I can help. I surely don't know it all but if you have a question about something, feel free to ask. Yes, planes are MUCH easier than heli's....generally. Generally, with a plane, you are just going forward. Heli's have so many different directions, lol.

I'm actually really looking forward to this scratch build. Shouldn't take me too long to do and it should be a lot of laughs when it's done.

Nice one Derek thanks very much, I will take you up on that. I've never had much luck with planes, just one of those things. I've always admired peoples ability to design and scratch build their own planes. The problem for me tends to be getting the CG right and making the model too heavy with glue I think.
I am determined to get the Crack Beaver flying properly! It just looks stupid fun!
Again, not wanting to put any pressure on you lol, I would love to see you scratch build one.
Videos to follow this weekend, fingers crossed.
Hope you get some flying in through the weekend.

No worries, Cameron! Glad to help! I may have to pick your brain about the exact dimensions on a few things on your plane but I'd be happy to build one and see what happens.

This part is way off topic of this thread but the plane that I have that I am most proud of is my Blue Cub STOL. It's a scratch built Super Cub. Flaps, powerful motor, 3 axis stabilizer, AR8000rx, and it's super smooth in the air. I'll have to get some video of that plane posted here on the Hangout. I've got well over 30 flights on it and it is still such a treat to fly.

I might start drawing up some pieces for my scratch built Crack Beaver this weekend but it's gonna be a little while before I can actually start the build. I'd like to finish my Velocity 50 build, I have a custom quad project that I'd like to start (once all the parts get here, I have my "Super" Trex 500 Project that I'd like to start this year, and I have a rather large project coming to me soon and we'll talk about that later on, lol.

But....if you have any questions about planes...I'd be more than happy to try and help.
