Well I have day 5 pics taken. Just need to resize so will be posting up tomorrow morning.

Two items of note.

1) I finally got the the rotor hub to snug down on the main shaft. Had to crank the cross bolt down an inordinate amount.

2) the kde 700xf motor doesn't fit under the canopy. I'll need to cut open the cooling hole more.

I'm hoping that once I do that the canopy fits on the helicopter. Right now the thing will not come close to the rear studs. It seems like the holes that were pre-drilled are too high. I may remove the motor and test fit again before cutting it, just in case I need to make a replacement request.

Yeah, I'd do that first! But cutting the canopy isn't hard and can be done with looking like u "cut" the canopy. My little 450 has a cutout on the port side to accommodate the side mounted ESC. My N5C has a cutout for accessing the on/off switch to keep me from having to remove the canopy each time I land. The Dremel is on of the best tools on my bench. Use the cut disc for straight lines... Once done take out the meat & clean rounded edges with on of the barrel attachments. For added steeze u can use fuel tubing w CA to trim the cuts... U got it!

Oh... Another canopy trick I use is Sharpies... Get urself a multi colored pack... They are great for coloring exposed canopy areas due to minor crashes, cracks, cuts... Up close it looks texturally different.. Take a step back... U won't even notice. Can't wait to see this thing bud!

Thing it's it's a carbon canopy, not normal fiberglass. The paint chips very easily. When I was expanding the rear grommet holes it was chipping like crazy. Luckily the grommets almost cover it and a little bit of think CA filled in the gaps to the carbon.

Just nervous about it. Fiberglass definitely seems more forgiving.

Started off finishing up the tail boom assembly. Only thing left is the pushrod. Had to let that sit overnight to cure fully.

But I couldn't wait to get it installed into the frame! :) I ended up having to undo my first setup of the belt tension because I somehow managed to get it turned the wrong way. Then I had to take the whole thing off in order to get the standoffs for the FBL plate installed. Third time was the charm. :) At least so far. I'm sure I'll end up having to remove it one more time for something.

BK 8005 brushless tail servo. This thing is lightning quick according to specs. Could have use another 8002 cyclic instead and still been fine.

AS I said in the other post, carbon fiber canopy. Georgeous to look at, but a bit of a pain to cut/modify due to how fragile the paint layers are. Specifically the clearcoat. Doesn't appear to stick too well to the carbon fiber, compared to normal fiberglass canopies I've worked with in the past. Luckily the area I need to cut out for the motor is painted yellow (with a big "700" embedded into it in white) so hopefully it will be more forgiving that the clearcoat only areas I've been cutting so far.

They didn't supply enough foam strip to reach to the ends! I'll probably get some more along with some rubber canopy edge protector (for use on the motor cutout).

Was hoping to have a canopy on picture here, but no such luck due to the motor cutout issue. Hopefully tonight.

Got the canopy foam and edge protection ordered up. Also some extra shims for the main rotor in case needed. CC quick link and some more sab servo horns.

EC5s should be here today.

Going to try a test cut in the canopy with my dremel, after test fitting without the motor in.

Actually, going to hold off. Finish it out without canopy. Test fly it and see if the motor is what I want in there. Then decide if I'm going to cut it or swap out the motor.

EC5s came in so I finished up the power wiring. Made a series harness with the BEC taps on the negative pack only (6S to the BEC, 12S to the ESC), and spliced the harness to the ESC leads. The BEC leads went into an EC3 connector (not necessary, but I've gotten accustomed to doing a connector inline instead of a direct splice). In hindsight I probably should have used some 6mm or larger bullets for this ESC splice connection instead. I may yet replace it. It can make for an easier emergency removal of the batteries and also provide a breakaway point if the batteries get ejected, instead of yanking the hell out of the ESC and possibly damaging things worse.

This motor is tall. Way too tall for the canopy. I'm going to hate cutting a hole in this thing to fit this motor. I'm planning to finish the build, do a test flight without the canopy, then decide.

I'm also going to recheck the manual on that tail servo ball link. It seems like it should be on the "inside" part of the arm instead of the outside where it is now. That rod is bending a lot to get to the uni-ball.

Iv only seen a Gobby naked once or twice in person... They are interesting in design for sure. Build is looking good... I can wait to see her fly bud! I very interested in that motor... I'm running the same motor, ESC, FBL unit, & packs in my next build... Still gathering parts.. Ur getting urs in the air before me.. So ur the guinea pig! How far out till the maiden?

I'm going to work on testing electronics and doing ESC, BEC, and FBL setup tonight. Already have the Ikon taped down. I need to pick up some double sided sticky foam to mount the RX sats, BEC, and ESC and then should be good to go. Assuming nothing horrific happens, should be maidening tomorrow or Friday.

I removed the motor and put the canopy on. It does lock into place, though one side seem a bit lower than the other. I'm going to have to put some soft velcro on one area to prevent servo rubbing. And may need to debond the edge protection and carve out a couple small triangles so it doesn't come into contact with the Ikon. I imagine a canopy edge slapping against the Ikon wouldn't be too good for the gyros in it. :)

The hole they put on the left side of the canopy was slightly too high. I might have been able to fix it when I expanded the holes but didn't know of the issue.

No pics from today's work. Got the setup complete. Rest of the wires zip tied up. I'm going to do maiden with flat curves, ungoverned. Then setup governor.

The motor got warm, borderline hot to the touch, just spinning it up on the bench for a couple minutes.

Blades go on tomorrow and test hover in the back yard. Video to come. Hopefully uneventful.

I need better link pliers. These are just a hair too small to deal with normal SAB link ends, much less the bigger ones used on the blade-swash links.

My issue with the pliers is the removal nub is too close to the end. I keep digging up the sides of the link ends.

Weather sucks here. Rain all day. No Maiden. Will do it tomorrow.

However, I did take the lack of maiden as an opportunity to setup the governor and auto-rotation bailout. Going to use velcro to help secure the BEC and ESC and batteries. That will leave the sats. Need to get some double sided sticky foam for them tomorrow. Then we'll be ready for the test flight. Stoked. :)
