Paul's Edge 540T

Post by pvolcko »

I'll be taking the plunge into the land of airplanes soon!

http://www.electrifly.com/largeelectrics/gpma1572.html

Used a $50 gift certificate to help buy it. Going to planning out the parts while waiting for the kit to show up.

Thought about going with a trainer for a first one, but I fly off a grass field so needed something fairly substantial in size and weight. That and I figured I'd bore of it pretty quickly. So straight to a mid-wing, 50" performance flier!

No selections of parts yet. GOing to go electric, that's all I know so far.

I'll probably go with a As3X based spektrum unit, but I want to make sure I can disable the stability feature so I can get experience flying unassisted as well.

i think ken and derek know about the As3X.
I tried HH mode on my gyro this afternoon, it was horrible didnt like the way it felt at all. I'll be sticking with the normal stabilization mode, it just cancels the wind out.

That's a sweet plane, Paul! Very very cool!

If you are looking for an AS3X rx, this one would work very well! http://www.horizonhobby.com/ar635-6-cha ... r-spmar635

This is the same rx that I'm going to buy for my scratch built 74" 3D plane. Awesome little thing!!!

So I've got the kit here. Need to order up some parts. Thinking I want to go 4S with this, 800-900 W continuous. Could go with manufacturer recommended motor (Rimfire .32) and servos (futaba S3115 or S3150), but want to consider alternatives too. I can probably figure out the servos, but could use some help on the motor end of things.

1) Is 4S and 800-900W continuous a good target for this size plane (50"/1260mm wingspan, not sure on weight off-hand)? I'll be flying sport and beginner acrobatic to start with, but want to be able to grow in skill with this and have the power to pull it off.

2) Is there a danger in going for more than the manufacturer recommended power and motor system? Maybe shoot for 1000W continuous and perhaps 5S?

Another option is the hacker a30-12XL, any motor with the same dimensions is good and the more power the better that way you can drag it out of trouble if needed. I'll have a look around. There are other options for you guys in the US I know some guys who swear by sunnysky motors. I'll try to find a link for you paul.

You can go with whatever motor will fit under the cowl, but the main factor when selecting a motor in the weight of it. So that you can still get you CG right.

another motor thats used in this size of plane is the torque 2812T/720 http://www.extremeflightrc.com/html/torque.html

So I unpacked the box and there is some damage to the fusalage. Couple "ribs" in the section behind the wing are cracked or broken. Couple of punctures through the coating. Toward the tail the covering is bubbled. A slice in the coating in another spot forward of the wing. How much damage upon receipt is reasonable vs unreasonable and worth getting a replacement from the manufacturer?

ahh. forget it. Unwrapped it and took some pics. Looks like the tail half of the fusalage got crushed in transport. Pieces falling out. Severely weakened and fixing it would involve removing covering, patching the bracing, and then recovering. Not worth the trouble on a new plane. Called the shop and they are getting a replacement sent out.

Just the fuselage as far as I know. If it's a whole kit that would be awesome. Will end up with many good pieces left over for spares. :)

Got the majority of parts ordered up I think.

- eflight 32 motor: more or less a match to the rimfire .32, but less expensive, also considered a g-force, hacker (expensive!), and some others but this seemed the best match and no headaches on fit. May upgrade up a step if need be.
- CC 75A edge lite ESC: little more than needed, but gives some room to upgrade the motor if I want.
- assortment of apc and evolution props 12x6, 12x8, 13x6, 13x8, and 14x6 Will do some testing once I get some flying in. Will start with 13x6 probably.
- savox SH-0255mg servos (found a good price on them)
- servo extensions and y's
- (2) 3000mah 4S batteries
- (1) 1000mah 6.6v LiFe battery for Rx/electronics Hopefully will be fine for 6V servos.

Not sure. Maybe end of the week or early next week. We'll see. In no big rush. Not sure it is going to fly before spring anyway. :)
