Ive moved this thread to this section as is more appropriate here.

Ive been having some strange thoughts over the last few weeks, dreaming of carbon fibre and stainless. lol got quotes for titanium (noob).

Ive done some maths lol. and im going to scratch build a 300mm heres a list of stuff ordered at the moment (parts will have to be cut and machined, probably by hand lol)

16x12x500 matt 3k carbon fibre tube (esc's being fitted in the tube)
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141494933672? ... EBIDX%3AIT

Red ABS Sheet. easy to work with and cheap to prototype with, once im happy im going to cut carbon plates

3K motor mounts

16mm alloy tube clamps.

40mm standoffs

dys sn20a (ive got them and they work) Afro 20a slims for 5s
cleanfight
oneshot

I have looked at this thread several times, Dan. I am very much interested in seeing what you come up with for your custom quad. I even did some searching, of my own, and I've decided to build a custom quad of my own....as if I needed another project to work on, lol. I'll start a thread on my build thoughts when I iron out some more details. I don't want to clog this thread with my own thoughts.

You mentioned that your build will be capable of a 5S setup. That should make for an exciting ride.

im not really 100% on the design Derek, Im not one for drawing up plans and will probably wing the prototype.

I know its going to be a rigid H quad and that durability and high performance are the main focus of the design, but until i receive the carbon tubes (opted for carbon tube with 2mm walls), motor mounts and tube clamps i cant really do a lot as they dont supply measurements for the clamps and mounts. Once i have these components i can start playing around with the measurements for the body plates, arms ect.

As for the 5s thing there is a little stambo demon in my head that keeps whispering 7" props......

I don't know how you could better that quad you have Dan, it's totally awesome, so light and agile, super responsive to sticks too. When I flew it it was the difference between Cessna and a jumbo jet....mine being the jumbo...lol

Its more of an exercise to see if i can do it, I want to build a cheap durable quad that anyone with a few hand tools can build at home.

i've started too run through the measurements of my bodge-copter build.

for the quad to throw 6" or 7" props the frame will have to be 334mm from corner to corner. the line on the right of the paper is to scale from motor shaft to motor shaft down the length of the quad showing the amount of clearance between the 2 sizes of props, and a rough sketch of the overall dimensions of the quad frame.

The second image is a scale front view (tube clamps aren't to scale as the size is unknown until delivery) including the body size and prop clearances, Overall dimensions of the tube arms cant be confirmed until i have the motor mounts and tube.

Here is an opinion from a scratch builder....whether you have a clue about what you are doing or not, it's a learning lesson. Will it come out "perfect" on the first try? Maybe, maybe not! Just take the knowledge that you have, at this point, and do what makes sense. There is no right or wrong. My opinion is that your drawings are right on track. Yes, you were looking to build a 300mm quad and based on your drawing, the quad will come out around 334mm. That's fair! Do you have any scrap wood and dowel rods that you can use to "mock up" the frame with arms? This may help you get an actual size reference, in 3D, and you may be able to make further decisions and/or alterations from the "mock up".

3d model is a cool idea Derek, Ive got a A1 sheet of foam board that I could cobble a mock up out of.
I will get on it on Friday night.
Thanks for the help derek

Glad to help! Sometimes having a cheap frame, made of inexpensive items can help. It will give you something that you can see and hold and then take measurements from, then trim this and remove that. Then you can make the"real deal" with confidence.

Nice one Derek, some good tips there. Looking forward to this Dan. I'll come down and see her flying when your finished. Maybe then I'll be able to fly this quad fpv style...lol

Maybe come down for the fpv maiden Tony.

I've was sorting through my batteries earlier and found a couple of 2250 35c 6s packs, hmmm.

And looking at the drawings I may be able to squeeze 8" props on.

Haha ha, this project is turning into something insane

This is what I am building, I will use the electrics from one of my larger quads that ran 4s so power will not be an issue.
I will run at least 8" or maybe 9" props.
Making it with wood, cheap to build and fix. :)
I have been playing in sketchup. :)
Sizes are subject to change as I build. :)

I'll have a look at sketchup tomorrow looks an interesting piece of software
