Re: High Altitude?
Nice flight, but unfortunately this is the sort of thing that will get FPV banned or highly regulated.
It makes no difference what country you are in, these vids can be seen globally, the USA has enough of a fight on their hands already, I am glad I am not there.
All it will take is one incident involving any kind of RC aircraft at that altitude and the big ban sticks will come out.
As far as I am concerned if people want to do this sort of thing fine, just don't post the evidence on Youtube for all the world to see.
But then who would they be showing off to right.
Rant over.

Re: High Altitude?
Have to agree with you there Stambo, and of course that vid will encourage others to try it... If I'm not mistaken in the UK the height limit is 400 feet, not 3,000 as he done...

Re: High Altitude?
I'm not 100% certain but I think the ceiling, here in the states, is also 400'...pretty sure. Nonetheless, that was an awesome video. That Skyfun seemed super stable. It didn't seem to get bumped around on the climb to altitude.

Re: High Altitude?
The UK law changed recently with the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority), the people who will prosecute you, changed the height limit to 1000FT:)
Not sure where this is filmed, but i will find out:)

Re: High Altitude?
I think the problem is that the rules are so fragmented that its difficult to try and work out whats right and wrong.
That table is great CAA and BMFA should have made that, It should be sent out with every phantom.

Re: High Altitude?
I seen a guy today for the first time flying a phantom, just as I was packing up. He took it up high and just left it, stood there having a fag.... It was so boring I left... Where's the fun in that. Like Dan says, more fun at 4 feet and less...lol

Here in Florida they banned the drones from The Grande Prix of Tampa Bay. The drones are to dangerous around spectators.

Re: High Altitude?
Cool.
However, there was a great deal wrong with this flight. 1) Way over 400' ceiling. Through a cloud layer. No way to maintain visual line of sight or to see full scale aircraft approaching the area. 2) Flight area was over residential, commerical and roadways. Big no-nos. Experimental flights like this should be done in wide open rural areas where risk to person and property is minimal. 3) No buddy with him to help. When his ground station problem occurred he should have had someone there to help deal with it instead of him having to divide attention and apparently put it on a glide path while he dealt with it. Boddy can look for approaching full scale aircraft traffic. Can use binoculars or a spotting scope to maintain visual line of sight in case an unfixable FPV problem occurs.
In the immortal words of Kelly McGillis: "The encounter was a victory, but we show it as an example of what not to do."
