Yes you do need the ftdi Derek it's used to set up the parameters within the bluetooth module so the naze recognises it and that the data transfer speed is correct. I got mine off eBay it was only a couple of quid/bucks, so far I've used it for gps and osd.
It's a handy tool to have and I think it's worth every penny. You could also use an arduino but it's a bit more complicated as when u flash the device it also flashes the atmega chip on the ardunio too.

OK...I found this:

https://www.adafruit.com/products/70

Is this what I need? If so, how do I hook up the Bluetooth Module to the FDTI? One end of the cable is the USB...easy enough, that goes to my laptop or PC. The other end has a 6 pin socket. My Bluetooth Module has a 4 pin socket. They won't connect, as is. Is there a video that you know of that may shed some light on this for me?

I just found and ordered this on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/USA-1PC-FTDI-FT ... 3a9023ca23

This looks more like what I think I need. It has the pins sticking out. The other adapters that I looked at were the opposite

Good choice Derek, I've got a few of these. The 3 volt option comes in handy for my work. Make sure you cross the RX and TX when you connect it up.

I'll do that, Tony! Thanks! I've seen 2 or 3 videos on how to use the adapter and I remember seeing that they crossed the RX and TX, too.

I was expecting the adapter to show up today but I just checked the tracking number on the post office tracking site.....it seems the seller opted for the cheapest and slowest shipping option because the adapter hasn't even left it's original state yet. Bummer!

wait, wait, and more waiting.

A pic of my Bluetooth module

I'm guessing the bit of plastic is actually a bit of heat shrink, yes?

Would there be any reason that I'd not want to shrink wrap the module?

I downloaded and installed the suggested Arduino software so that the FDTI adapter can talk to the Bluetooth Module but my laptop isn't showing a connection port in the software for the adapter. I think it's just about time to take my laptop back into the computer shop and have things fixed again....or maybe it's about time that I get a newer laptop. I guess that's ok. I'll just put the Bluetooth stuff in a bag and put the bag into the box with the other misc quad stuff and I'll come back to it later. I don't mind using the laptop for the Naze programming.

Have you installed the ftdi driver D. This site might help you... http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

Just go to the driver for your OS. Once it's installed plug your ftdi adapter in. Then right click on my computer, go down to manage, then when the window pops up go to device manager on left. Then scroll down to comm ports, click on the arrow on left to open you ports and you should see what comm port has been assigned to the ftdi.. Use that port in the arduino ide. Over on the right at top of ide click on the serial connection, this will open a window which allows you to communicate with devices..
Plug your bluetooth module into your ftdi, make sure RX and TX is crossed, the defaul baud rate is usually 9600, so set that in the arduino serial window at bottom. Type AT, followed by carriage return and you should get OK back. Your now connected and you can change the name, baud rate, PIN number as you wish..

I have no idea how to do what you said. I can turn the Bluetooth on, but that's all I know how to do. I'm just trying to use my laptop (as per a "how-to" video by Painless360) to program the settings in the Bluetooth adapter via the FDTI adapter.

You firstly need to make sure you have a comm port setup for your fdti. This will need a driver installed if your lappy hasn't picked it up.. So plug the fdti into your lappy first and check to see if it's picked up by windows..

Re: Considering Going With Bluetooth

lol, my 17 month old daughter woke up screaming a few hours ago. She must have had a bad dream or something. So, I dropped everything I was doing, without hesitation, lol, and I was tending to her until she went back to sleep. After I was confident that she was back to sleep, I got back to working on the Bluetooth connection to the EZ-GUI Ground Station.

Tony....thanks for the link to the drivers. For some reason, my laptop didn't want to download the drivers automatically but after going to that link that you provided, I downloaded the drivers for my laptop and the FDTI adapter. I began to follow the video provided by Painless360 on the setup and connection and within 15 minutes....my Android tablet is now talking to my quad. Just super fantastic!!!!

I think I'm gonna pull the Bluetooth Module off the quad and shorten up the wire leads a bit. The leads that are on it now are probably 8" long. I'll need to decide on a place to stick the Bluetooth Module and then determine the lead length.

Anyway...Thanks a bunch guys! This has really been a learning lesson for me. I don't know how much I've absorbed. I hope I can remember all this if I need to do it again. I appreciate all the help. I can build them. I can fly them.....but all this "technical" stuff is where my expertise reaches it's limits, lol.

This might be a silly question, but here it is anyway, lol.

Is my Bluetooth Module going to stay onboard the quad at all times or is it something that I should remove while I'm flying?
