So, we've all seen some amazing 3D flying from the likes of Tareq Alsaadi, Bert Kammerer, Alan Szabo Jr, and more.

I have been doing some thinking about "Big Air" flying but I'm just wondering...What kind of maneuvers would you consider "Big Air?" Loops, rolls, Cuban 8's....what else? I want to do some flying this year that forces me to incorporate the rudder more. I've never been much of a "rudder" flyer, as bad as that is, lol. This year is going to be different. I'm going to focus on that "RCHN Pilot Proficiency Program" and Big Air flying.

Help me out with some thoughts please!

Big air is more about taking up your flying area with a maneuver. You could include large hurricanes and funnels. I also think of smooth fluid transitions. Lighter disk loading, lower head speed and higher pitch lends itself well to this style.

I've been working on the "smooth fluid transitions" on the simulator all winter.

What do you mean, "lighter disk loading?"

Lighter air frame on same sized baldes or same weight frame on longer blades. I works the same as wing loading on a plane. For instance if you fly 700mm blades with a machine that weighs 11 bounds it will feel lighter if you went with 720mm blades or it will feel heavier on 690mm blades. Higher disk loading is more apt for smack 3d or box flying (an imaginary box on the ground that's something like 100m by 100m square). Light disk loading is more apt for floaty big air and auto rotations.

Nope...I think you were spot on. I'm very much looking forward to the flying season. The weather forecast is calling for high 40's and low 50's next week. THAT is flying weather!!!

YUeah and I got to work on Monday night. But I have Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday off then 3 Day shift for the weekend. Will see how much flying I can get in if the weather is that nice.
