PID Settings:)

Post by Graham Lawrie »

I would like everyone to post their settings as a guide only to help people like myself who are new to playing with them.

This is for comparison only as i know all quads are different:)

Am I guessing this is just the Naze setup?

Finally, I have time away from work. Time to get back to my quad and the PID settings.

Yes, my quad is flying but I get an oscillation from time to time. I was just looking over this thread and I see that Graham's settings are higher than mine in many columns. Do I need to raise certain values until I get a constant oscillation and then back them down a bit? If so, which ones should I be looking at?

Yes.. I'll start my tuning tomorrow.. Can some give explains of which gains have what effect.. Also.. Do these values differ upon the various controllers.. I think I'm the only one here that uses a CC3D.. Except maybe Lee.

Give us some video of the oscillations Derek, onboard cam is best.
Don't take too much notice of other peoples settings as they can be way different on a very similar craft.
They are normally good to get you flying but from there it's fairly individual.
Props, motors, ESCs, battery and weight all make a difference.

That all makes sense, Stambo! Thanks for that! It's gotten a bit late for flight testing so I will try tomorrow. The weather forecast is calling for 20-30mph winds tomorrow but perhaps the winds won't be as much in my backyard. My yard is blocked by some privacy fences, houses, sheds, and lots of tall trees. I may be able to get some onboard video. I'll just have to see if I can get it to oscillate.

I have flown the quad around my yard a bit and it's really not horrible, at all. It flies a lot like my Trex 500...it's not as twitchy as my 450 but it's not as solid as my 600. What kinds of test maneuvers should I be doing that would tell me what PID adjustments need made? Hard pitch outs? Hard banking turns? Soft banking turns? etc etc.

Little throttle pumps, left right flicks and forward back flicks should be enough to get a fairly good idea.
First need to identify which axis is the problem, roll or pitch.
Perhaps drop the level P down a little at a time until it comes back to level too slow for comfort.
Then bring the roll or pitch P down a little at a time if the oscillations are still there.
Once the P is sorted then you start on I.
When well tuned the Naze32 is solid as a rock but well tuned does not happen until you start flying acro. :)
Have you checked out my FPV course video?
I challenge you to watch it without leaning your head. :)

I have been flying in Horizon Mode, mostly but I have experimented with Acro Mode and I really didn't find it too difficult to manage. I just need to get some time that I can sit down and dedicate to the final setups, flying in Acro, and building my confidence in the quad, itself. If I remember right, the oscillation that I get is mostly when I am descending. Perhaps some of the oscillation is from coming down through its own prop wash, which is something I try not to do..

If that is the case, try increasing roll and pitch I a little, helps to hold better on descent.
