Range Checking A Multirotor

Post by Derek »

Range checking a plane is quite simple. Stand back and watch for the control surfaces to move from a distance.

Range checking a helicopter is a bit more difficult but still easy to do. Stand back and watch for the swash plate to move up and down from a distance.

Range checking a quad......what would be a good way to be sure that a successful multirotor range check is performed?

Hey Derek. I'm not sure if this will work for you but the wife and I use walkies/talkie to communicate with each other. She is on one end with the quad and I'm on my riding lawnmower riding away from her with the TX and goggles. Any time I lost view in the goggles, I'll ask her if the quad is beeping or if the quad was beeping, she'll let me know. I dough if this will work for you but it's just an idea.

Before I start this explanation I assume you have set failsafe correctly, and assume no responsibility if you have not. :D

Put tx in range test,

Arm quad so props are spinning at idle,

start walking away as you would with a plane range test until quad goes into failsafe and props stop spinning.

you should have gone 30 paces I think if I remember correctly,
Minor league Aviator, against gravity which normally wins!

That makes sense! Thanks Kev!

Also, i have definitely set failsafe properly and i test it regularly. On top of that, it wouldnt take much to simply remove the props, or strap the quad down, to conduct this test.

Very cool!
