I'm wondering what you guys think. Instead of carbon fiber plate, would there be a suitable or acceptable substitute? Plexiglass, lexan, or that abs stuff that Dan used for his mock up for his Bodgecopter???
Or.....is carbon plate the only good way to go?

No not the only way to go. Been seeing some interesting work with sandwiched layers of lower cost materials. Ply, balsa, foam core, g10, thin carbon (instead of 2mm+ thick stuff).

CF is used for a lot minis so they can take a beating but I guess it depends what you want to do with it.
Anything light with a bit of strength to it will do.
