That's right starting in February a new "sport" begins. Drone Race League. This looks like a bracket style competition with 17 pilots.
Now the thing that caught my eye besides the soundtrack is the fact at least pilot is using an frSky radio. Let's see how that pilot does.

I don't know but I lied the one the Asian dude had. Earphones and glasses.
Not to mention one pilot has an frSky TX. Should be interesting.

I saw another video where they're trying to make it out like this is the next great sport and that drone pilots will be sports gods or something like that.
Absolute lunacy.
It may achieve some notoriety and people at the top will be well known within certain circles. But the thought that this is going to be some kind of national phenomenon is nuts.
Don't take this the wrong way, non-US people, but soccer has a better chance of becoming a nationally popular spectator sport in the US than this. I know, soccer is big outside the US and while it has gained some popularity here in the US over the last decade, and has been a staple team sport in middle and high school sports programs, it has decidedly not achieved the standing of a nationally popular spectator sport here.

Even if it doesn't make it as a mainstream spectator sport I just hope it brings a positive light on the hobby.

It may be world wide, but I don't see it becoming much but yet another geek/nerd thing in the US, much like rc modeling in general. In other words, no one's getting a date for being a quad racing pilot.
That said I'm sure it will continue to get more popular and will help to improve the image of "drones", so long as it's done safely.
Thats one thing race organizers have to keep foremost in mind: safety. Not only for racers, but spectators, race staff, any media covering events, etc. Besides health, it's also critical for the benefit of the modeling and racing community in general. Mistakes will get a lot of attention. A big accident early on could scuttle it before it gets going.
