Uri's Big bird build journal

Post by murankar »

Today is the day for all great things to happen. I just ordered the motor and esc for the new big bird which is still kinda TBD. I am about 90% certain as to what kit but I really want to ensure it is the right kit. Once I receive the kit I will inform the forum as to my choice and why. My Goal is to order all the parts so I can build up my VIP points then turn around and use those points for the Airframe. Even though I am at training I still have my bills to pay so that will dictate my purchase schedule and since I am not sure how much I will be getting I am playing by ear.

My schedule of purchases (subject to change):
Today: Motor and ESC;

Date TBD (maybe next friday): Servos and FBL and maybe one set of packs for the 12S system.

DATE TBD: 2 sets of flight packs for 12S setup and ESC Program Box (Currently out of stock)

Lastly: Airframe

I hold it in any longer. I have decided on the Goblin 570. It just has more presence over a standard pod and boom. While the E5 would have had more flexibility in the stretch department I decided the 570 would be a better fit. Currently I am not trying to get into a 700. I just cant afford a 700 with the packs and blades all being over $100 a pop. My real intention is to fill a spot and I think the Goblin does that. Its at a size that can auto, it can stretch to 600 and maybe even 620, although I have not read any forums posts that would suggest it cant. Hands down Goblin has a lot of US support for parts. Even though Heli direct does carry Synergy its not at the same level as Goblin.

So now you know and most of the why.

After watching many videos I got hooked. I have wanted a Synergy but like I said the Goblin has more visual mass. Plus I got hooked on the boom cover on the Gaui. It just adds something to the airframe. SInce the motor and esc are ordered I am planning the next purchase.

As for other issues that I may or may not have over looked. Redundant and Primary power for the RX. I have decided on the Opti-guard and RX packs. Not sure which packs of the 2 I have picked. both are pulse and 2S one is in the 2000 mah and the other is in the 1300 range.

Today I drove for 2 hours finding local hobby shops. I found a Hobby town USA and a place called Rail and Track or was it rail and lane. Might I digress, I went to H.T. USA to get some odds and ends and ended up buying the ends needed to make servo leads. Went to the other place to get more thread locker, helping hands and 2 3 foot servo extensions. After watching the Goblin 500 build by Bert I decided I would need extensions and I want to custom cut the servo leads to the fbl.

My next issue is going to be EC5 connectors and the para board from PRC for charging. Since I have the modular system all I really need is the top part that has the EC5 already on it. Next is going to be extending the balance cable and extend the wires for the back pack. Think I just may order the board here soon and some 10G wire for the extenders.

One last thing on the 570 what size hex key is needed for the spindle bolts? Plus what other sizes might I need? I have all the sizes in my EXI tool set but I think I want to either order the Goblin tool set or just order what I need from scorpion.

Congrats mate.
I think your tool kit will cover all, except the blades grip bolts, and Feather shaft bolts.
I'll look later when I'm home.

thanks Lee, I am giddy as hell right now. I got the motor and esc in the mail on saturday, but I wont actually get them till tomorrow. Sucks but it is what it is.

I am thinking of getting the airframe next and save the Heli direct points for the packs. I think I can get a better discount if I use the points on the packs. So we'll see what happens.

I must have missed that list. Thank you! So for tools I will just order the scorpion drivers that I am missing.

Now here is the question of the day: Back up guard, to use or not to use? I have read on other forums that its not really needed with the Hobbywing and that the built in BEC is reliable. I am on the fence as to get one or not. For now leave it to the side unless someone can raise a compelling reason to get one. If I do use the Ultra Guard how is it going to wire into power system and will the power back feed to the ESC?

I use the scorpion Backup Guard.
For $25, its a cheap form of insurance, if the ESC fails for any reason.

I may have to settle for the scorpion, all though I like the Ultra Guard better. I guess the big thing is, how does it wire into the power system?

-=---UPDATE---=-

SO the Hobbywing I got is the OPTO version or without BEC. Looks like I will need either an RX pack or a BEC. So the question is which should be ran Pack vs. BEC. For weight I would like to use a BEC plus its cheaper I think.

I do the RX pack myself.. No back up.. This set up has saved me several times!... If the motor dies do to whatever.. I still have cyclic control and can auto... Food for thought... & depending on pack choice, not much more weight than a BEC either.

Well.. Let's be clear.. R u gonna use an HV servo? If so.. Straight Lipo is fine.. If u r using standard servos.. Ull still need a regulator to step down the voltage to 6V.. Now that's how my 550DFC is set up.. I'm using the Align RCE-B6X regulator... An added plus to this reg is it has an on/off switch.. I personally digg that feature.. There is another outfit call "PerfectRegulators" that has several models with various features.. Those that use them highly regard them as the cream of the crop.. Especially those who use them on Nitro models.. U can get them with a glo igniter as well.. Google it.

Update on the parts list:

As I figured would happen the Army pay system has not caught up with me yet. So next Friday is my actual payday. With that said I have a few things to take care of then I will do some ordering.

My next items that are for sure are the Airframe and servos and maybe proper tools. I say maybe because I have tools and a complete set of hex keys really is not essential at the moment. I do how ever want a quality set that I know can handle the rigors of abuse. Then following that is going to be batteries and Neo. Cabling and connectors is going to be the last thing since I want to ensure I get it right the first time.

My flight pack wiring is going to be simple and to the point. I am going to follow Justin Pucci's making a simple stick pack with single bullets.

I like the opti-guards personally, over scorpion backup guards, since the opti-guard will keep itself charged.

As for wiring, you just parallel it with the BEC feed going to the FBL/Rx unit. It monitors supply voltage from the other source and when it drops a certain amount, the guard (either one) will kick in to feed the power needed. You can either plug it into a free servo port or you can parallel wire it to the BEC lead (or use/make a y-splitter for servo leads).
