Don't get complacent!!

Post by Stambo »

Don't get complacent guys and gals!!
Had my 250 miniquad hooked up to the PC last night making a few adjustments.
It was sitting on the floor in front of me with the battery connected and props on (something I don't normally do), I hit save and reboot and the next thing you know I have a flying blender in my lap.
Right little finger tip shredded, a few slices up my forearm and a slight fat lip and tender nose. Seemed to happen in milliseconds.
I won't post pictures because I still have trouble looking at it myself.
I cannot handle the sight of my own blood, and there was plenty of it. It was all I could do to get to the bathroom and run the finger under cold water to slow the flow.
I wrapped it in a damp cloth and just sat on the bathroom floor for a while until I composed myself a bit.
Stuck on a few people repair patches and have not looked at it since. I probably should go and get it looked at but I think it is probably already too late for stitches.
Amazing what those little 5 inch blades can do, and this is why no matter what the rules say, I don't fly near or over other people.
Its not gonna kill anyone but it can sure as hell hurt. :)

More annoying than bad, it just gets in the way when I try to do something, and hurts a bit when I bump it.
It could easily have been so much worse.
I know what caused it now too.
Thinking back now I remember I armed it and blipped the throttle a little.
I have in flight tuning set up on my quad but did not have the switch on the transmitter in the right position.
Pitch P ended up at 200 so when I armed and blipped the throttle it went crazy.
It won't happen again.
Now when the transmitter is in the position to adjust things it abuses me so I don't leave it there. :D
It also now gives me a switch warning when I turn the TX on, something I should have done from day one.

Ouch... I know u say u were connected & changing settings.. but how do u have ur "arm" set? I'm not sure if it would have helped... & one should always remove the props.. just curious tho.. couple guys I fly with still use stick movements to arm/disarm their quads.. I have mine set just like my helis w throttle hold switch for arming.. get well soon.. them fingertips are a bitch to work w like that I know..

oh wow! The arm damage isn't so bad but that finger got pretty messed up. I'm glad the physical damage wasn't worse.

Clay...I have my quad set up with stick movements to arm and disarm. I think it's the stock method for arming and disarming. By moving the throttle stick down and right, the board is armed. By moving the throttle stick down and left, the board is disarmed. There is a way, in the Modes Tab, to set the Arm/Disarm to an Aux switch.

I arm with the sticks but also have throttle hold set up on a switch.
This was pure and simple, my own stupid fault.
I did exactly what I constantly tell others not to.
I was in too much of a hurry.
Lesson learned without any serious damage, it could have been so much worse. :)

Ok.. suppose this turned into a thread jack.. sorry.. I think arm/disarm with the sticks is silly... what if u disarm it by mistake in flight... I don't know.. I like mine on the TH switch.. makes life easier for me.. anyhow.. back to topic... band-aids... get some! Lol

Stambo, Clay brings up a good point (besides the fact that this has turned into a thread jacking, lol). Can my Naze32 be disarmed in flight if I were to take the throttle "down and left"?

I agree with the disarm statement above, I have seen to many people with the stick arm in the club trying to set up the quad on a pc and doing yaw limits and arm the quad panic cos of the beep then move the throttle, not a pretty outcome.

but I will add that arming/disarming by the sticks takes so much longer than by throttle hold, and in a sport where you can travel a significant distance in that short time, I set mine up like a heli, switch disarm FTW.....

Yeah.. and I don't know about u guys, but I use air mode across the entire range.. so if I'm armed... I'm spinning regardless of stick position.

Mine are the same. But have never disarmed during flight:)

I guess it's possible but I have been flying the Naze32 for more then 2 years and I have never done it.
If I was flying freestyle and doing tricks I might reconsider but until then I will arm with the sticks and use throttle hold switch as a backup.

Wow. Glad it wasn't worse. That finger got cut up pretty bad. That'll take a while to heal up. Keep it clean.

Lucky I heal quick.
It's been just over 2 weeks and the finger is almost back to normal.
I dare say there will be scar tissue for a while but I can live with that.
A little tender if I bump it still but nearly good as new.
I do have a new found respect for those little props though. :)
