New FPV Pilot Is Born....more or less, lol

Dad came to me a few weeks ago and was looking for an inexpensive fpv set for him. We looked around for goggles and decided on the Eachine 007. They were $54 from Grayson Hobby. I decided to loan Dad my ZMR250 because then he doesn't have to buy a quad without the fear of "possibly" not liking fpv (as if that's possible, lol). Dad did need to buy two new antennas. One to replace the whip antenna that came with the goggles and one to go on my ZMR. I think they were $11 each.
So, Dad brought his goggles to me, today, and we set the channel to match the vtx on my ZMR. That works perfectly. I tried the goggles on and the video is really quite good. I'm impressed! I have my ZMR bound to Dad's DX6i...that was pretty easy to do. I did a few test flights to trim the accelerometer....that was pretty easy. I gave Dad my protective carry case and about 2 dozen props....so, he should be in good shape!
If the weather is decent tomorrow morning, I think we're going to head out and introduce Dad to FPV flying, ha ha ha!

That's great to here. Good luck and go have a blast you to. Make sure you have some sort of DE-toxic meds because he will be addicted and he'll want more. It's hard to stay away

and there's no cure for it so far

Dad and I went out the other day. Because he had never flown a quad before, he flew several packs LOS. He did real good. I do have some video on my phone....I just need to get the video posted. I told him to progress as he feels comfortable. I think he may drop the goggles next time we are out.

We look forward to seeing him progress.
He has a big advantage over many as he has you Derek to guide him where many of us had to go it alone.
When he gets to flying FPV, just remember the basics, properly set up self level, big empty field, keep moving forward, always have a spotter.

And of course good luck.

You're right, Stambo! I remember when I first started fpv. Thankfully, I had you guys! As for the basics, he's using my quad...so, he's good there. Big empty field....no problem. Spotter...I'll be there. Keep moving forward....I've told him about that, too...because you kept telling me that...and you were right.

No, he's not under the goggles yet, but here is a bit of video of Dad flying a quad, my ZMR250, for the first time. This may have been the 2nd or 3rd flight that day. I wanted him to fly LOS, first, so that he had an understanding of how the quad moves. I imagine that he'll be under the goggles in the near future.

He caught the bug... didn't he. Excellent job for the first time even if he flew a couple of batteries, well done

Nice job, a few more like that and he will be ready for the goggles.
Are you gonna put some gear on a ground pounder first so he can get used to the goggles?
I found that helped me a lot, Jacob too.

Putting a video system on a ground pounder would be a good idea. Ill have to see if i can work out a way to get a system rigged up.

Another good thing about a ground pounder is you don't have to worry too much about adding extra weight.
You can just throw an extra battery on for the video system.

That's a new development with your dad Derek. I am also a newbie. I'm waiting on a new ESC, can't upgrade the firmware on one of mine. I have only flown once with the goggles on. Definitely need a spotter for a while. It's too weird not being able to look at what you are flying.

Thanks again Stambo for your comment on my You Tube page about never start FPV by hovering. Glad I didn't hit myself trying.

No worries Ken, I wish someone had given me the same advice when I was starting out.
Hovering is probably one of the more difficult things while flying FPV.
If you keep going forwards you can see what you are about to hit and have a chance to avoid it.

Any other direction you are flying blind.
