Derek's Delta Wing With Naze32

Re: Derek's Delta Wing With Naze32
Lol....Thanks to Stambo for meeting up with me on Skype for a bit. After a bit of troubleshooting, we found out that the Naze32 board "needs" (at a minimum) the first 4 channels running from the rx to the Naze board. Because I am setting the Naze up on a Wing, there is no rudder, so I did not have a lead going from the rx to the Naze for the Rudder. The Naze did not like this and, therefore, was giving me a blinking green light. I did not know that a blinking green light means that the Naze isn't getting information from the rx. I think that's rather odd but who cares what I think, lol. Stambo suggested that I remove my wires from the Naze board and use the Naze breakout cable. Ok...so, I connected the breakout cable to the Naze and then connected each lead to the rx (throttle, aileron, elevator, rudder, gear, aux1). Plugged everything back in, connected to Cleanflight, and powered up the tx and the plane. Now....everything works, lol. From here, I just need to set the travel endpoints and make sure that the Naze is correcting my control surfaces in the proper directions, lol. Just too cool!!!
Once I get this sorted out (I should be able to handle this on my own), I'll share a video that shows what I've done.
Thanks again for your time, Stambo!!!

Re: Derek's Delta Wing With Naze32
No worries Derek, I am glad we were able to discover the problem.
Having a ppm capable rx would have made this issue nonexistent.
We both learned something about the Naze32 that may also help others in the future.
Being able to see you working in the configurator through skype and seeing exactly what your naze board was doing made all the difference.
This is what a good forum is all about, being able to help each other.
Looking forward to seeing the flight videos, who's is gonna be first.
After thinking about this some more, the Naze32 probably needs a rudder input in case you are running 2 motors and want to use differential thrust for yaw.

Re: Derek's Delta Wing With Naze32
Thanks for taking the time to help, Graham! I imagine if I had gotten a video done, you would have noticed the green blinking light and informed me just as Stambo did. When I pointed my webcam at the Naze, Stambo quickly realized that the problem was that the Naze wasn't getting information from the rx...that led us to the need for all wires to be connected, including the Rudder channel...despite the fact that I'll not be using it on my wing.
So....the lesson is....blinking green light is bad, lol.

Re: Derek's Delta Wing With Naze32
I just got done using the tx subtrims to take the channel travel, in Cleanflight to the 1000 minimum and 2000 maximum in the Receiver tab. Throttle, Aileron, and Elevator are now set. I imagine that I will have to calibrate the esc in the Motors tab, in Cleanflight, right? Unfortunately, my lil girl is sleeping on the couch (right behind me) so I will do that step another day. I would really feel bad if the motor (with prop off, of course) would spin up and scare her out of her sleep. That would be horrible.
So, once I get the esc calibrated, it's just a matter of finding the servo arms and getting the control rods connected to the servo arms (I took them off while I was setting things up because I didn't want to accidentally strip the nylon gears). Once those are connected, I'll have to double check that the Naze gyro is correcting in the proper direction. After that, set my dual rates and expo, locate the battery spot (forward or behind the 7" cg line), attach a prop, tidy some wires, and this plane is ready to fly.
Stambo...after further thought, I did reverse the active position for the Pass Thru and Angle Modes on my 3 position switch. Personal preference but I was able to get it switched and saved, lol. Thanks again for your help!
Pictures and perhaps an overview video to come....
I would like to ask this question though...
Why is it that I have to have a wire going from the Naze32 breakout cable to each of the rx channels? Throttle, Aileron, and Elevator are obviously necessary for a wing. I'm Arming the Naze with the Gear switch, so I can see that I'd need that wire connected. I'm using the 3 position AUX1 channel for my flight modes, so I can surely see that I'd need that connected. Why would I need the Rudder channel connected if I'm not going to use it?
Stambo and I determined that if a channel is missing a wire, the Naze doesn't get the info from the rx. I'm sure it's just my inexperience as to why I don't understand "why" it needed to be connected. Anyone have any thoughts?

Re: Derek's Delta Wing With Naze32
As this started life as a multi rotor board it is probably a base requirement for all aircraft types.
Also if the wing had 2 motors it would require the rudder control for differential thrust.
Removing this just for a single motor wing would probably require a fair bit of extra code.

Re: Derek's Delta Wing With Naze32
Very interesting. I've been looking at FC's with RTH and OSD for my wing, and a naze with gps and minim OSD would be one solution, with the bonus that I already know the hardware and software.
FPV addict.
Re: Derek's Delta Wing With Naze32
I'd like to have RTH and OSD but it's just not in the budget right now. I was just thinking that since I have 2 Naze32 boards just sitting around, I may as well experiment with one of them on a plane. I am quite familiar with this particular wing that I'm using and it can be a twitchy lil thing, lol. So, I was curious about the different flight modes being used. With Stambo's help, I now have the Passthru setup so that I should be able to fly the wing as if the Naze weren't even on board. Then I'll also have Acro Mode so the wing will fly with stabilization and I also have Angle Mode set so that I should have self level. Unfortunately, the weather here is quite cold so it's going to be a while before I can "comfortably" test it.
I would love to have the Eagletree Vector (http://www.stoneblueairlines.com/flight ... r-osd.html) but I just cant afford that right now and I think it would be quite odd to have a $240 unit on a $2.00 airframe, lol.

Re: Derek's Delta Wing With Naze32
I've looked at the vector too and at the moment that's out of my price range, I've also looked at the FY 41AP lite and the cyclops tornado. The tornado has stabilisation, osd, rth and way points.
Both the above systems have an airspeed sensor as well.
I might have a play with a naze myself I've got one knocking around and a gps module for it. I would just need a minim osd to complete.
Hmm I like a challenge......

hmmm, that minim osd that you are talking about...is that the $10 osd at HK?
As for my airframe....I suppose I should have shared this with you guys earlier. This wing was designed and shared by a guy name Ed (ExperimentalAirlines on YouTube). He's an absolutely fantastic guy that has developed build techniques using 1/8" foamboard. This foamboard can be gotten very easily for $1.00 per sheet and each sheet is 20"x30". I've been a huge fan of the ExperimentalAirlines planes for the past several years. I love this wing so much, when I crash one...I build another one immediately. It's just a lot of fun and it fits in the backseat of any car. As long as I'm flying planes, I will always have one of these around.
Here is the original flight video from Ed while he's flying his:

Very cool! PM me how much you want for shipping, and your paypal address, and I'll send the money. Thanks Clay!cml001 wrote:I've got one.. The minim odd.. I'm not using it.. Pay the post & u can have it.
Yes, my wing has the prop in the front. Over the past 4 years that I've been flying rc's, I've had 3 of these wings. The wing that I'm putting the Naze32 on will be my 4th wing. Once you get the CG right, there is nothing that this wing won't do....well, it won't knife edge very well (no rudder, lol) but it's just an awesome little wing that costs "chips" to build. Even my electronics setup is less than $75. In fact, I'm using the same motor and esc that I had on my very first wing. Some simple 9 gram servos have served me well. As for using coroplast, I wouldn't see why you couldn't use coroplast. I did add a stretch of carbon fiber for a spar but I imagine you could easily incorporate a spar into the coroplast. Like I said above, it's just an awesome little wing that will fit in the backseat of any car (or SUV in my case) and I'm sure it flies 60mph+.Stambo wrote:Is yours tractor prop like that one Derek?

Re: Derek's Delta Wing With Naze32
I figure at least on my smaller aircraft I don't really want the distraction of OSD.
For my AXN, I built a simple voltage divider the other night that sends pack voltage through my D4R2 rx down to the Taranis.
At the flick of a switch I get a flight pack voltage spoken every 30 seconds.
For FPV on a wing like that you would I guess either mount the camera a bit higher than normal or out on the wing further so you would not get too much prop/motor in the screen?

It could easily be converted to a pusher, the weight of the fpv gear up front would off set the motor at the rear.Stambo wrote:For FPV on a wing like that you would I guess either mount the camera a bit higher than normal or out on the wing further so you would not get too much prop/motor in the screen?
