I need help finding "GOOD" 5S lipo's
I've got a project that I'd like to start after the new year....well...sometime between the beginning of 2015 and Spring-time. I'm ordering a beast of a motor and a resilient ESC and probably a good BEC, too....but I'll also be looking for battery packs, as well. I'm planning on running this project on 5 and 6 cell packs...probably in the 4000-4500mah range but I'm also going to be looking for a high C rating....probably in the range of 40-45C but I'm having some troubles finding these packs. I did check my preferred battery supplier, BuddyRC, but the only 4000mah pack they have is 30C. I know that this new project is going to see a lot of "Full Throttle", so I'm not sure that 30C is going to be quite enough. BuddyRC does have a few 6S packs that I like that have 40-45C rating.
I'm not going to buy Pulse packs, nor Thunder Power. Those packs are just too expensive for my budget. I have no doubt that Pulse and Thunder Power are great batteries, just not for my budget, lol. Any ideas on what other brand of batteries I should be looking for?
Once I get more details ironed out about the new project, I'll start an all new thread for it because I think you guys are going to want to see this.

Re: I need help finding "GOOD" 5S lipo's
That's exactly the type of pack I was looking for but I read the reviews and it doesn't look like people are very fond of these. My first thought was HK packs. I have several 3S packs that are almost two years old and they still work very well and show no signs of puffing. Perhaps it's just a matter of how you take care of your packs....no over-discharging, keeping them at storage charge when not in use, etc, etc.
Thanks Jesse!

Re: I need help finding "GOOD" 5S lipo's
I'm not a fan of nano-tech packs above 300mah or so. Even the 1.3mah ones I had bit the dust way too quickly.
May want to see if amainhobby has any eco-power packs of the type you're looking for. I've had good luck with the one eco-power pack I have so far (6S 5000mah). Very similar to pulse and epbuddy in size so I'm guessing made from the same raw cells, and well priced.
Can you just go 6S from the jump? Lot more options in that cell count. 5S isn't too hugely popular, even in the plane realm from what I have seen so far.
30C 4000mah = 120A. You sure you're going to be pulling that kind of continuous current at 5S? Can you prop down a bit to take some load off the system? Assuming prop is the motivator in your project, of course.

Re: I need help finding "GOOD" 5S lipo's
These are by far the best packs I have used.
IR is super low, so lots of power.
They are put together when you order them.
You have your name printed on them.
A heat sensitive label for waring if battery is to warm.

Re: I need help finding "GOOD" 5S lipo's
I will look into the eco power packs. Never heard of them. I suppose I could just go with 6S from the jump...I have many 6S packs and they are quite easy to get my hands on. Can I prop down a bit? I'm sure I could....it's just going to take some testing. I'd love to give some details about the plane build but I wanna keep that as a surprise, lol.pvolcko wrote:I'm not a fan of nano-tech packs above 300mah or so. Thanks for that Lee! I forgot all about those batteries. I remember you praising them when I was talking to you about them months ago. I'll look into it!Lee wrote:These are by far the best packs I have used.

Re: I need help finding "GOOD" 5S lipo's
I've decided not to concern myself with 5S packs. I have an upcoming project (Scratch built Weston UK Velocity 50) that I was going to run on 5 and 6S packs. However, since I already have several 6S packs and 6S packs are easier to get, I'm just going to run 6S packs. Chances are, I will be getting more Glacier packs. I get them from BuddyRC and they are just in the next state over from me, so shipping times are very respectable. I've been using the 6S 3700mah 45C packs on my 600 and they are still just as solid today as they were when I got them and they barely get warm.

Re: I need help finding "GOOD" 5S lipo's
I first saw BuddyRC at IRCHA 2012. Unfortunately, I didn't have much money left to purchase batteries while I was there. (spent a lot of money at the HeliDirect tent, lol)
Paul was the first forum person that recommended them to me. If I remember right, Paul said that my 3S packs from HobbyKing would probably work just fine for me with my 450 but he really frowned on HobbyKing 6S packs and strongly talked about the Glacier packs. Now, I do have two 6S 3000mah packs that I bought two years ago for my 500 and I'm still using them. They still balance very well and my flight times haven't changed but they do get a bit warm. The Glacier packs, for my 600, never get more than slightly warm.

Turnigy blue packs (non-nanotech) are fine. It's the nanotech packs I've had lousy luck with.

Re: I need help finding "GOOD" 5S lipo's
ahhh yes, I do remember you saying that. The two 6S Turnigy packs that I have are the blue ones...not Nano Tech.
Nonetheless, I think I'm just going to continue buying from BuddyRC. Yes, the packs cost a bit more but they are closer to me, their phone customer service has been very good when I call and ask questions, and they have a higher "fast charge C rating."
