Hey everyone, I switched out a yep 80a esc to a HobbyWing 100Av3 esc on my 500 today
. There's two kind of HW 100A esc. 100A and the 100A HV "Cooling fan". I ordered the HW100A but a fan came with it
. Sooo I was wondering if the fan is needed on the 500 or not
Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays Everyone!

I thought helis had a huge cooling fan that kept them in the air.

If it is the type that the cooling fan bolts on to the ESC then why not fit it unless you have room issues?
The better that it keeps cool helps:)
If you are not doing hard 3D manoeuvres then this may not be an issue. Check the temperature it gets to before and after fitting the fan.
But if they have one fitted then there is a reason for it:)
I cant do hard 3D and my 550 has been warm:)

Thank you Graham Lawrie
No hard 3D maneuver here just sport flying. Yes, your right about room issue. I ended up mounting the esc on the side of the heli. I'll give it a try without the fan and see how hot she gets. Like you said, if they have one fitted then there's a reason for it. Hopefully I wont need it. Looks bulky with the fan on anyway

Based on your flying style, DOG, I don't believe that you need the 100amp esc and I don't believe that you'll need a cooling fan either. I'd be shocked if your esc gets over 100 degrees...even in your Florida heat. However, the 100amp esc will surely give you ALOT of extra amp protection. I have a 75amp esc on my 500 and it only ever gets warm to the touch....never hot. On top of that, if you did add the cooling fan, the 100amp esc should remain "that much" cooler. Functionally, the 100amp esc, with fan, "should" run flawlessly....despite the fact that it's simply overkill for a 6S 500 heli application.

Thanks Derek. Your absolutely right that the HW100A is a over kill but the HW80A ESC that I wanted was alot more expensive then the 100A one
. I think it was like $25.00 cheaper then the 80A with the discount card. Plus the 100A is rated for the 480-550helis. I though I couldn't go wrong. Go figure but that's why I got the 100A one. $$$$
