It's definitely a good education. Learning new things and hoping some else can benefit from it.

I took another step this weekend. My dad came over and I explained everything I have done. So for a quick recap:

1 soldered the wires, reason for that was to shorten the wires in the beginning.

2 checked continuity, reason was to make sure signal can pass. It does based on the test. Downside is that it does not check the quality of the signal. In the end it is just making sure I have metal to metal contact and that's it.

3 made a jumper wire to bypass the signal wire. This seemed to work because at one point I got a flashing orange light. Have not tried to repeat it yet.

So my final thought at this point is that the crimp for the signal wire is bad. One solution is to do a quick solder on both ends or replace the cable. If I had the tool and crimp ons for this application I would just remake the wire. Since I don't it's off to hobby town and see what they have. Although hobbyking is looking tempting.
