regulators?

Post by danhampson »

I saw a thread where Derek and Tony talked about regulator being used on a quad.

so my question is can i make something up with electronics parts that can supply 5v and 12v output form a 11.1v-25.2v (fed dierctly from flight pack).

i would like the 12v section to be filtered in some way for the vtx (ferrit ring maybe)

or am i better off using a bec and then a regulator/ferrit ring for 12v?

i am an electronics noob!!

Simple enough to do Dan, but you can't get 12 volt from 11.1 volt without a booster circuit. Still simple enough to accomplish.. First question would be what sort of current do you require from both the 12 and 5 volts sources... Filtering is easy enough with inductors and capacitors

ive had a look through the electronics and the system could all be 5v, i will have to look into current draw over all the components but to be honest i cant see it being anywhere near 3amps. i would still need a filtered 5v out for the video side of things.

Designing a 5 volt filtered supply from any voltage isn't a prob Dan, im not sure if it would be cheaper to buy one though than go through the trouble of designing something. Chinese usually have some good stuff on eBay... You would really need switched mode rather than linear. Linear will dissipate a lot of heat... But I'll put a circuit together for you if you wish mate

ive double checked the specs on the VTX it can be wired directly to the battery loom, as it can run 2s-7s. i may just need some sort of filtering for the vtx power spur and i'll grab another hobbywing 3a bec for 5v to the FC.

Thanks for you help tony.

No probs mate, you can knock up a good filter with only a few parts. What current does your VTX need, and is this the 5 volt side...

No this is for the battery side which can be anything from 4s to 6s. I can't give you the current draw of the vtx at the moment, those specs aren't on the website I purchased from but the vtx should be here tuesday so ill give you that info then.
