Derek's Hobbyzone Delta Ray

My Dad came to me a few months ago and asked that I teach him how to fly. He wanted to scratch build a plane that had a bomb dropper, on board, and he wants to fly with me. Fantastic!!! I've had him on the sim and he's done very well. I decided to buy the Hobbyzone Delta Ray as a trainer for him because it has the AS3X and SAFE technology. It's an awesome plane. Slow flyer. Very predictable. This was the maiden flight with me on the sticks.

Thanks Tony! Yeah, it's an awesome and slow flying plane. It's quite different than anything else that I fly. My Blue Cub is slow but this Delta Ray is super slow and very very stable with the AS3X. I got the BNF version so I just had to assemble it, refer to the manual for the tx settings, and then charge the battery. Simple as that. I did change the connectors to Deans plugs (my preference).
No, my Dad did not fly that day. I only have the one battery (more have been ordered) and Dad wants to make sure that we have the buddy box set up when he flies for the first few times. We'll get it sorted out and then Dad will be on the sticks. Then...we'll do an unveiling of the plane that we've been scratch building for him.

Hey Derek. Cant wait til you and your dad unveil the mystery plane that's been scratch built. I like that causal talk between you and your dad while landing the Delta Ray right by you guys. Almost looks like you know what you are doing my friend? LOL! Keep the birds flying.

Thanks DOG! Dad is very happy with the way that his plane is turning out. We've been working on it, from time to time, when I have days off work. We really don't have much more to do before it's completed. I'm hoping to get his plane finished up next week and perhaps a maiden flight next weekend. As for the landing....thanks! This Delta Ray just floats right in, with minimal throttle. It's just awesome!!

Dad's first flight will be when he says that he's ready. He wants to fly on the buddy box. The Delta Ray has 3 flight modes. My DX8 (master tx) has a 3 position flight mode switch. My DX6i (slave tx) only has a 2 position flight mode switch. I'll have to test the two tx's and see which two flight modes the DX6i will have. I'm almost thinking that my DX8 will have "beginner, intermediate, and advanced" and then my DX6i will allow "beginner and intermediate". If that's the case, then we should be in good shape. I will try to get video of Dad's maiden flight. I'll see if my wife will run the video cam for us or perhaps the Mobius cam on my hat.

Thanks Tony! I did post the Maiden video a while ago. It went very well. I actually bought this plane for my Dad to learn how to fly with. We haven't gotten him on the sticks yet. The weather has been very unfair, lol. If we can get another day like the other day, I'll get Dad on the buddy box.

Today was an awesome day for the Delta Ray. My Dad and I got together for a few flights, including my Delta Ray that I bought as a trainer for my Dad. I took two batteries, figuring one battery for me and one battery for Dad. My flight was smooth and lazy with a pretty cool landing. Now, Dad's turn. I figured that I'd do the take off and then hand my DX8 to Dad and he could fly it around. I'd be right there in the event that something went wrong. I explained to him where the Panic Button was located. Based on the way that Dad was talking, he wanted to take off, fly, and land it. He was a bit apprehensive about the landing but I was there if need be. So...a fresh battery was plugged in. We had plenty of runway. I pointed the plane into the wind and Dad was on the sticks. Dad got the plane into the air with no troubles. I was talking to him and Dad seemed real good and comfortable. I asked him if he'd be ok in the air without my for a moment so that I could go get the camera. He said yes. I went and got the camera and pressed record.
So...we did not get Dad's take off on video but we do have video of him flying the plane, on his own, and he landed it....on his own, lol. It was really cool to see and I'm real happy for him. Dad will get me the video and I'll get it posted. We also have video and pictures of my fpv quad and my Trex 600.
Stay tuned!

Here's the video of my Dad's first flight and landing with the Hobbyzone Delta Ray. Be sure to check out the smile on his face after he lands the plane.

Not bad for an "old" rookie...if I do say so myself.

Nice last half of a flight.
Those foamies can be a handful to land in the wind.
