HELP on wood hull finish

OK...My first post. Let's hope I'm in the right spot for this. I like boats. They never fall from the sky into a pile of...well, you know. I have not built one for several decades but am back into it in 1/6th scale. Over the winter, which is nearly gone, I built a scratch build based on some plans from the 60's from the look of them and the language used. It is just over 2 feet long and the hull is all 1/16th plywood and is awaiting the decision on just what to use. It was suggested to use epoxy paint. Well, as I am seriously unfamiliar with this nor have I found an outlet for it other than for garage floors I am looking for other options. In the early 70's we just used varnish to seal and enamel for color, unless my memory is completely gone. I have so much time and effort in this project I do not want to ruin it before it hits the water. As I am NOT a competitive boater is there anything wrong with varnish and enamel?
I'll have to see if my son can help me add a picture to this as I have not figured that out yet. Sorry.

Welcome to the forum from Scotland:)
Dont know much about the subject of rc-boats, but with most things you paint, it is to do with preparation, sanding between coats, an watching what you are using as you can get chemical reactions, blistering etc.
Try these:)

I made a surfboard out of wood, and used Epoxy to coat it.
The stuff I used was West System Epoxy.

I was just at my Dad's house looking at the boat. It came out a bit heavier than expected but it sure is sweet looking.

I just got the first coat of paint on the bottom of the hull. I should have the main painting done by the end of this coming weekend. I'll get a few pictures posted as I progress as it seems there is interest. The wood IS pretty but the seams suck as it is plywood. You know what that has to look like up close. A fair paint job should make it look good in pictures and video and, for me, that's what it is about when running it.

sounds good progress, looking forward to seeing it floating in the water... have you any clues as to what electronics your putting in... im guessing its only going to need an RX, ESC and servo for the rudder is it... ive never sailed an RC boat before.. will you be using a reversable ESC to go backwards..
and did i miss your name, or do we call you West0618 or maybe D's Dad...

Dad came to me about this boat project, too. He was asking for suggestions for suitable electronics. Choosing electronics has never been my "strong suit" but we looked at other boats that had similar shapes and sizes and then chose a motor and esc that was comparable. I don't remember the exact specs. I'll see if I can get Dad to post the specs but I do remember that the ESC is reversible.

Since you and my Dad are about the same age, I'm thinking it's kind weird for you to call him "Dad", lmao!!! I'd imagine, for the time being, you can call him "west". Not sure how he feels about sharing his name. Some people are like that. I'll speak with him about it.
