Unluckily, I Got Lucky!

Post by cml001 »

So after play'n with the N5C & her temperature issue... Which may or may not have been an actual issue... I had 2 of my 5000mah packs charged from the other day for the 550 & decided to spool up for a hover in the yard to burn'm off since I ran outta daylight that day & didn't fly'm... Then I was gonna bath her since I had the stuff out already.. So as most of u kno I don't use a BEC.. I opt for a seperate RX pack which I do need a regulator for as my servos are not HV.... I get the bird pluged up & flick on the power switch.. Nothing.. Looked it over & found the problem.. Which incidentally I knew was gonna happen... & I took no steps to prevent it.. So I actuall deserve to have had this happen mid flight.. But got lucky & found it prior to a takeoff.... Negative wire came loose from the solder pad on the regulator. I had thought to use some shoe goo to hold it from wiggling & use a zip tie mid way to the battery connector.. But never did... I'm stupid!

You got lucky on that one. Your not stupid, just lazy if you knew it was going to happen but did nothing to prevent it. Shame on you!

Yeah... Last year when I built her.. As I was shething this wire with the braid.. I thought.. Man.. That's got a lot of wiggle... Had a few ideas on a solution.. But never came back to it. Must have been a "Squirrel"! Anyhow.. Got another ordered & on its way... I'll repair this one and toss it in the drawer for a back up or another project if needed in the future.

?.... When the new on gets here.. I will wire tie the lead this time for sure... But I want extra protection... There is a gap between the top & bottom where the leads come out of the regulator along the side... I wanna use either shoe goo or hot glue down in the gap to keep it from wiggling... Any ideas on which I should use?

I've never used shoe goo but I have put hot glue between the heat shrink and motor wires in the bodge copter, more for waterproofing than anything. The cables seem to quite well fixed to the esc. Hope that helps Clay.

I suppose I'll post this here as my 550 is in fact lucky! U may have read my post in my flight log that I had a low voltage cut fly'n the other week due to not hearing my timer & fly'n too long.. Only the skids were broken in the hard auto that resulted. Not even the vertical tail fin broke... Kinda amazing that the all 4 legs of the skids snapped and that was it.. Anyhow.. My baby got some new shoes!
