Stambo's Flight Log

Post by Stambo »

I figure this is the best way to keep all my flights in one place.
Should I post up my previous ones from that "other" forum?
Everyone here has probably already seen them but I suppose for the benefit of new members it's not a bad idea.
(And to get my post count up :))
I have one from today uploading now, just a quckie of a new flying site we found which I will post as soon as youtube has finished messing with it.

Ok you asked for it. :)

Here is my very first CP helicopter, an Esky Belt 450 CP V2.
I had a 9053 coax but that almost does not deserve a mention.
I knew nothing about setup, head speed, DR or expo, it was flown pretty much out of the box with the stock TX.
I am surprised it flew at all. :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RF58tCC7Szs

After learning a little about blade pitch and tracking and spending a lot of time on the net I decided the stock TX was just not good enough.
I bought a Turnigy 9x, so now I had to learn about pitch and throttle curves, DR and expo and all the stuff you need to know about setting up a CP heli, I decided I needed to fly.
It was cold and windy outside, my shed was jam packed with vehicles and junk so I did a what I now know to be a really stupid thing.
Luckily I got away with it. :) I am now officially an addict.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6bo4OaOJBM

Unfurtunately video of my heli flights is scarce as I was mostly flying on my own.
Next to come was a used Trex 500 from Westy here in New Zealand.
By now my competence and confidence had increased mildly but I was absolutely thrilled at how rock solid this Trex was in the air.
Made me realize how much better a larger and better quality bird could fly.

Here is a few more. :)

This is when I discovered aerial video, the early stages of the FPV bug set in.
My heli flying still wasn't that great but seeing my first on board flight videos just fuelled the fire.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnmC3lzAOXQ

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxEegPrVz64

I then discovered multirotors.
This first one was scratch built and was never a great flyer.
Aluminium frame with Turnigy 1100 kv motors, AE30A ESCs, KK2 and initially running 3s on 9" props.
I eventually got it flying reasonably well on 4s but I was never happy with it.

Next came an HJ450. (DJI flamewheel clone)
Now I started actually being able to throw this thing around a bit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ki4lcXbOqWI

The days weren't long enough to fly regularly after work and it was so still at night so guess what was next.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlv-igZFCDA

I also started playing with WLToys V949, V959, and V911.
This gave me inside flying time.

As I said earlier, I started kicking around some V949 and V959s and found they were great fun.
Good to throw around outside and small enough to fly inside also.
Even better when I started flying them with the Turnigy 9x.

By now the FPV bug has bitten hard and I am fully infected.
I started messing around with my new Fatshark Predator kit on the 450 and quickly realised there was just not enough realestate to fit on everything I wanted.
I ordered the alien kit from Banggood and some more motors and ESCs.
I have also learned about simonk ESC firmware, what a difference it makes.
I had been waiting for a friend to be available during an appropriate flying day to spot for me but finally I just went out and did it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOSDBfj ... 2jIb53taGA

No going back now, FPV is fully embedded in my DNA and can not be removed.
Helicopters have been put on the shelf to see flight on only very irregular occaisions.
The weather was not cooperating with my addiction so I decided to give it a go in some wind that I was absolutely not ready for.
I had also installed my OSD so I could keep track of flight pack voltage and had an RTH indicator.
This was a pretty scary ride but what a rush!
Took me nearly 10 minutes for my hands to stop shaking from the adrenaline/shock or whatever it was.
I did not realize until I checked the downlink footage but I got up to 83kmh at one stage.
Here is the result, one in HD and the other recorded from the downlink with all the telemetry displayed.

Finally starting to catch up, this next vid is the first of my addiction to mini quads.
This was with the PIDs in the Naze32 untouched and was my first flight with the Mobius on board.
I had been waiting for my friend Rob to be available as a spotter so at this stage had not flown it FPV.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lil5yWZk4zg

I have also now started becoming interested in fixed wing aircraft as the flight times are much longer for FPV.
I got this little Hobbyzone Champ as my first fixed wing. What a great little plane for a beginner.
It's a little hard to see as it is early evening. This was my first ever fixed wing flight.

Next came an AXN floater jet.
I assembled and flew this from watching Bruces videos at RCModel reviews. https://www.youtube.com/user/RCModelReviews/videos
I actually bought it because he raved so much about it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g27JNiQtufs

My first loops. :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g27JNiQtufs

And a couple of flights with the Mobius on board.
First one was just to windy for my limited fixed wing experience and I aborted.
Second I managed to throw in a couple of loops.
