3DHS 41" Edge 540 walk around.

Post by danhampson »

I did a build thread for this aircraft on another forum and didnt want to repeat myself so thought that i might as well do a walkaround of this plane.

Details of the parts that are in the aircraft at the moment are as follows.

The air frame is a 3d hobby shop 41" edge 540 (aka Buck Huck)
3D hobby shop omega 72g brushless motor
4 x Savox sh-0257 servos
YGE 60amp esc
Eagle hobby A3 Super flight controller
Futaba r2008sb reciever
At the moment im running this setup with 2200mah batteries but will be replacing them with 1800mah packs for the new season as i think the reduced weight will make all the difference when it comes to 3d.

The airframe was beautiful when i unboxed it.

The omega motor is capable of running at a massive 525w on a 3 cell set up, while only weighing 72g.

The ESC is tucked away in the cowl fixed to the side of the motor box to ensure good airflow across it while in flight.

Initially i was running the edge with low and high rates, but as ive gained confidence with her i haven't been using low rates at all.

The throws for 3D are as follows.

Aileron 30° 60% expo

Thanks guys.

I got the kit from Kings Lynn Models, i already had most of the electronics for the build so it didnt cost too much to put together.

How does this plane compare with yours, this is quite cheap for the kit..

Very concise manual. I've watched the first vid doing the landing gear and wheel pants.. Nice.

He was very particular about taking it out the box gently, yes it maybe taking some stick in flight...lol

Thanks for that Dan, tempted even more now

Is that £40 from the UK warehouse, or HK?

I don't think so Lee, I'm not paying that much. It's like those 3 lipos I got. £15 for 3 then £12 postage... They were suppose to be UK stock. Shame HK charge so much postage..

Postage from KLM is pretty good i think it was about £10 next day i had some other stuff coming with it too.

One of the reasons i went with the 3dhs airframe was because it was my first balsa plane, i didnt know what was right or wrong build wise. I didn't want the risk of it arriving and then it being wrong (motor box on upside down or something like that) and we all know what HK QC can be like sometimes.

There were two things that i did different to the manual one was not to glue the landing gear in. After a while its going to snap what with rough ground, harrier landings and plain old hard landings (im good at those). And the mod allows the gear to be easily be removed and replaced.
If you get one I'll take the cowl off mine and show you what i did, its an easy mod.

The other was just to put larger wheels on all round but thats just because of the surface that i fly off.

Nice one Dan, I think the bigger wheels are a must have. I'll have to find a new flying site for an aeroplane as nowhere to land or takeoff in the one I use for heli..

When I return from my trip to Spain at Christmas I'm going to buy one of these for sure...

Have you had a bad crash yet with it, can you get spare parts, wings etc?

not crashed it yet, ive had a couple of pretty hard landings (stalled it at 4ft lol it bounced off the landing gear and ended up upside down. lol there was no damage than the bent landing gear and alot of dirt).

Spares can be bought from the US but to be honest for the price I would just get another kit, if i couldn't glue it back together with costa coffee stick things. lol free repairs.

I've never flown an aeroplane before that's why I asked the question on spares... Lol. It can't be as hard as flying helis...

If you have got your orientations with a heli then you should be ok.
I had a epo aerobatic trainer before this but I killed it within 10 flights just pushed it too hard. The esc cut out at about 25ft doing knife edge at full throttle across the field. It was so funny. Lol camera was out of action at the time otherwise I would have shared.

I'm going to look at getting a beater that can practice low and slow, rollers and the such.

Possibly going to look at one of these.

That's a neat little plane, if my conversion is right that's less that £40.... It's in HKD

Orientations aren't too bad, I've heard flying a plane though helps with orientation. And on the sim when flying a plane it's more forgiving if you get orientation wrong for a second, with heli it's on the deck... Lol

Just googled it, prices around £32.... Wow
