How do you control your sticks

Post by Superbad »

I have always just used my thumbs
I bought some bigger stick ends to fit my large thumbs better for more control
So last night on the sims I started trying to pinch the sticks really hard with the big sticks but could tell I had more feel of the heli
Today I put the stock sticks back on my DX8 to give it a try Maybe learning to fly all over again

So less here how you fly and what style you like

Maybe I should have started with pinch, use thumbs at moment, but the sim is a good place to learn to swap...

LOL...perhaps I'm the weird one. I love the Playstation and I obviously play with my thumbs. However, when it comes to flying....I'm a pincher. I've tried flying my most gentle plane with just my thumbs....I just can't do it. I just feel that I have better control and comfort while pinching.

Got a point there like Kev, pinching and holding tx, must need neck strap...

I've tried flying with just my thumbs and it's such an awkward feeling....I may as well be flying with my toes, lol. I just find it's more comfortable, for me, to use my landyard and pinching. I dont find it difficult to have the ring ringer on my right hand to be near Throttle Hold when flying helicopters and I don't find it difficult to reach for the Flaps with my left index finger and the Gear switch with my left ring finger.

I thumb it currently, but I've dabbled with the pinch. I like the pinch. It does have a more precise feeling to it. But I have issues with holding the Tx. If I were using a tray system then I could and would switch over with relative ease. However, with just the neck strap and the hands holding it, I feel like I'm constantly having to readjust my grasp and fight the urge to tilt the Tx in odd ways. I also end up with cramps in my ring and pinky fingers. So, I need much practice on the sim before I'd try it out in the world.

That all said, this may be my big goal for the winter siming season, along with learning single and double piro flips, cleaning up my backwards circuit flying, and learning inverted forward and backward flying. I think it is likely going to be worth the transition effort due to that added precision I feel with the pinch.

The one time I tried pinching, was with a friends tray like radio. It felt ok, but no way would I do it with a normal radio.
With two fingers on each stick, I have no control over the radio, especially if i need to flick a switch in an emergency.
The only finger securing the back of the radio is my pinky fingers. It just feels very insecure.
I think you need big hands for pinch a hand held radio.

When I was trying pinching before I actually moved by throttle hold to the switch on the top right toward the front, instead of the back one. Made emergency cutoff easier, but still felt weird and I was always worried I'd accidentally flick it and end up having to ride in an auto-rotation unexpectedly.
