Spektrum DX9 battery upgrade questions.

Post by cml001 »

Hi guys.. I just got my new Pulse 4000mah Tx pack to replace the stock pack in my DX9.. I've changed the settings to LiPo & set the alarm at 7.4v... Just put it on charge while inside the Tx via the stock DX9 wall charger... ?s ... Will it terminate the charge once it reaches 4.2v per cell? I have a icharger 306... Can I charge it via the packs balance leads alone(& how if so) or is there a charge lead I can get(link?)?... Any advise & tips are much appreciated... Never used a Tx LiPo before. Thanks!

The in-tx charge will terminate when it's full. Nimh pack does not do that.

Using an external charger will charge it more quickly. You'd need to make a custom cable or find a supplier for it. Don't have any links handy, sorry.

The spektrum pack would but not 100% on the after market ones,

Personally I would rather be safer and I balance charge mine on my I charger

I also have a 4000 mah pack in my DX7. When it needs charging, I take it out of the radio and charge it on a balance charger. To be perfectly honest, I was not aware you can charge third party-batteries with the stock charger?

Really? Why would it matter what brand it was? Lipo is lipo. No?

Balance is .01 off.. So it looks fine via the wall charger and the light went off so I'm a assuming it did in fact stop the charge... Now to see how long I get between charges.. Tight fit in the Tx.. Uhhhh.. I forgot who here was talking about LiPo Tx packs.. But thanks.. I'm dig'n it!

My old DX7S originally had a nimh pack. When I upgraded to lipo I assumed voltage or current supplied by the stock charger would be wrong, so I started charging with the balance charger.

My new DX7 comes equipped with a liion pack, and in hindsight I should have known that liion and lipo are very close relatives, so maybe in this case the stock charger would have done the job.

I'm still not completely convinced that a nimh charger (stock radio charger) is fully compatible with a lipo battery though. But this boils down to the fact that I'm no electronics wizard and I have enormous respect for the "volatile" lipo batteries. I would appreciate the tech introduction to this particular case so I might be educated slightly :D

ps. will the stock charger be able to balance the Tx lipo pack?

The stock charge is very slow compared to an external charger. The cells largely balance themselves due to the slow charge rate. The radios also have a liion/lipo mode which may do balancing in addition to shutoff voltage detection. I'm not sure what the capabilities of the stock charger are.

200mah.. From the factory charge it was shipped at.. Took all night to charge.. It was still charging when I woke the next morning.. Left it be while I got a shower & ready for work... Went to unplug it on my way out the door & the light was off.. Charge complete.. Flew a lot today and went from 8.4v at the start to 8.2v when I started pack'n up... 3hrs or so usage.. I dig it.

I have mine at 7.2. On the 4000mah pack I get many, MANY flights before I reach 7.2 from fully charged pack.
