My FPV flight log

Post by Tony »

this is the first FPV flight attempt at the beach in Tarifa with Lee. i lost it here and had to give the TX to Lee to get it back... was funny. you need to go straight to time 1:00 to see anything, then at time 1:40 ish it took off in the wind, you will see some FFF, totally lost it.. Lee took control..Phew..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoFrTT_zhvQ

we then decided to go to Lee's flying field so i could see how fast i was going.. much better flying, still crashed it at the end, the battery was hanging off it after my first contact with the ground. lost Mobius for a while, but hawk eyes found it... :D :D :D

Well I was out this morning flying LOS, got threw 4 packs but the wind was really bad. Didn't fancy trying FPV in that. Was fun battling the wind though. Charging packs now, but wind is getting worse, and it's freezing..

What a great story! Flight, crash, missing camera, found camera, and then smiles and thumbs up at the end. Awesome!

You have to bite the bullet at some stage and just do it Tony. :)
After the first few solo FPV flights you will not be worried about the wind.
My first FPV flights were on my own with a 450 size KK2 stabilised quad and I was nervous as hell.
After the first few I could not stop.
I now realise that it did not really fly that well but back then I did not know any better.
You have a well stabilised mini that if you crash it you may have to put some new props on.

Do you you want me to tell you why you crashed in that last vid, no?
Too bad, I'll tell you anyway. :)
You were not going forwards, simple as that.
That is my cardinal rule for FPV, there is no backwards, it does not exist, it must NEVER be done. :)
Ok I may be over stressing this but you can only see what's in front of you, that's where you should be going.
As long as you are going forward (not too fast) you can see what's there and avoid it.

How long before the weather starts clearing up over there?
Ours is just turning to custard but unless it's raining, I won't (can't) stop.

Ok I'm off to format my PC.
It's getting too slow and things are not working like they should.
Waiting for about 500Gb of video and pictures to transfer to another drive so I can start from scratch.
Ipad is fine though so I can still check the forum, :)

Thanks for that Derek, yeah it was a great time with Lee, we had some fun together... The biggest sadness was seeing the gobby hit the deck... My 450 going down and the quad deciding it was a submarine was nothing... Funny really... I will definitely be going back to see him and Celia.... Not that he knows it yet... :D :D :D

Thanks for that Stambo, I'll bare the forward flight if I dare put the goggles back on... Haha, I'm sure I will.. The weather here isn't too good for the next few days, rain I think, it's the wind that's bad too. If there's a break tomorrow I'll go out and give fpv a go again...

Done my first fpv flight with no crashes, and I've brought it home.....yippeeeeee. The stupid bloody key fob cam ran out of battery before I even got airborne.... Anyway, I flew around in a couple of circles with Hawkeyes watching my every move.... I have to say the 600 camera is far superior to the 800, the 800 was like looking through the wrong end of a telescope...

So I'm chuffed to bits now, can't wait for tomorrow to go back, got a nice safe field to play in, I mean fly in, albeit the river 50 yards behind me.... Also got through 5 packs flying LOS but was too sunny to even vid that... This quad just rocks man, I have so much more confidence in flying now, whichever orientation it's in..

Key fob staying on charge now till tomorrow, hopefully at end of month I'll get a mobius again...

Yes I did Dan, and kept close by too, christine was telling me how high I was, how far away etc etc... Kept within 30' or so of myself... I found it hard to maintain a steady height though and keep her in forward flight without stopping, especially on turns...but it's my first REAL fpv I guess without a pro at my said... (Thinking of Lee there )

Thanks mate

That's awesome Tony! Nice job!. Wait a minute......did you say what I think you said??? What???? There is a river about 50 yards behind you?????

Let's steer clear of that one, lol.

Anyway...I'm happy for you, Tony! Very very cool!!!

Excellent news Tony.
You will find after a few flight your confidence will continue to grow and grow.
Very good idea to have a spotter I hope she is not getting to bored. :)
Just slow and steady, try to keep going forward, keep it close and you will be fine.
The turns will come with time.
Before you know it you will be zipping around like the rest of us. :)

Looking forward to the videos.

Thanks Stambo, appreciate your support. Christine actually loves to watch me flying around so that's good. Especially LOS flying as I can get some speed up and conquering those fast bank turns maintaining altitude too. Realised you have to come off the throttle slightly when banking, working a treat...

It will be a while before I'm up to you guys levels but slow and easy for now...

There is a lot of throttle manipulation required to fly one of these little things but once you get it, it just becomes part of flying.
Be careful with the throttle off on banked turns because as you get faster and the turns get tighter you actually have to throttle up a bit.
A lot of coordination required on sharp banked turns, bank hard, rudder, up elevator and throttle up, all nicely together and suddenly you are facing the way you came. :) (Don't try this yet, I don't want to be responsible for a crash.:D)

I'll keep it low and slow at the minute Stambo in fpv, but LOS is great going faster and faster now and getting to grips with the banked turns... Crashing is fixable, losing isn't.. so I won't be too bothered about crashing whilst learning, all part of the fun... Thanks for the advice though

Great to hear your progression Tony:) Familiarity with the area you fly is a must:) i am ok, know my areas like the back of my hand:) You are doing the right thing, slowly and a bit at a time:) I find LOS is worse for me, and orientation, nose in etc is easier in FPV:)

If you go to an unfamiliar site, walk the route you intend to fly and use markers or reference points:)
