Replacing umbrella gears
Hi guys. Thought I'd start a new thread on build & repair techniques. This came to mind while replacing a striped umbrella gears on my Align 550PRO DFC.
Anyhow, just thought this would make a good topic, sticky, or whatever for members to expand on.
The Build... Be mindful of the future. Here are a few pics of the 550's build process May 2014. Good routing of your wires will not only give a clean look to your build, but provide ease of maintenance & repair. Example, replacing the striped gears pictures above took less than a half hour.
Only one servo wire need be removed from the FBL unit(and one from the Bluetooth module, not pictured) to remove the side frame allowing access to make repairs. This is such a nice feeling to be able to get in & out of a repair job without spending hours to do it. Anyhow, just thought this would make a good topic, sticky, or whatever for members to expand on.

Nice one Clay.
If possible, I always mount everything to one side of the frame, for exactly that reason.

Stickied it for you.
Takes me half an hour just to get the damned bearings off the umbrella gears.

Re: BUILD & REPAIR TECHNIQUES
Open needle nose pliers and place the side of the plier arms against the bearing while the TT end is on the bench... Push hard! I usually just replace the bearings too tho.

Re: BUILD & REPAIR TECHNIQUES
Didn't have time to find the old bearing this morning on the way out the door, but this is how I get them off. Watch ur fingers! U can use a hammer and tap the bearing down or put ur palm on the pliers & push. Don't squeeze the pliers and grab the gear.. Just let it rest atop the bearing. But this works pretty quickly to remove them.

Re: BUILD & REPAIR TECHNIQUES
Usually I try to remove them straight out of the front tail box without breaking it open. I think I ended up doing something similar to your method last time I had to do it.
Or maybe not... That's physically impossible... What the hell am I remembering? Maybe I need to start drinking coffee. Maybe I need someone to follow me around and remember things for me. Maybe, just maybe... SQUIRREL!

Re: BUILD & REPAIR TECHNIQUES
Lmao... Sounds like me that Paul... This thread is a cool idea, but would it be possible to put each item in named folders so it would be easier to find the topic you need....

Re: BUILD & REPAIR TECHNIQUES
I was thinking the same thing Tony, prolly have to make this thread tile a category and thread titles would be individual topics.. I guess..

Would make it easier to find stuff rather than trawling through the different topics...

Yes?
I'll work on it tomorrow. Also going to see if I can get multi upload working again.

Re: BUILD & REPAIR TECHNIQUES
There is actually already a forum that fits this. http://www.rc-hangout.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=143
If you want I can move this thread there and change the name to something appropriate for the topic of the original post? New issues/topics would get new threads in that forum. Or are you guys wanting something else for organization purposes?
