1/6th scale Sea Maid boat

Post by west0618 »

Today was the day. August 16th, 2015 just after 12:30pm. It started out nicely overcast with a soft breeze. By the time we got to the pond it was a VERY clear sky…just a few clouds that did little good. And it got hot immediately. Since the last time I’d been to this pond some very long, string-like weeds had taken over areas of the pond. I wandered into these twice filling the propeller. Not good. I overheated the speed controller twice as well…but who’s counting. Both of these will be fixed. The first one just by being more careful along with getting more left rudder control and the second with some ventilation…I hope. With Derek on the still camera and my wife on the video camera we were off.
Here’s 9 pictures from the day followed by a video. I hope you enjoy our efforts. I have a few painting projects on this craft to complete now that I have seen her in action but those will wait until we have solved the overheating issue.

This last picture is of the Snapper out to rescue the Sea Maid by pushing it to shore as we did not know at the time the speed controller was simply overheated. And this was more fun and quicker than getting the fishing pole out.

I was running the still pics for Dad during this maiden voyage. What a great looking boat!!! It has no troubles plowing through the water. This boat would be a serious "eye catcher" if we took the boat to a more public pond but most of the more public ponds, around here, have water fountains and, according to our city parks department, it's a violation to run rc boats in city ponds with water fountains.

Nonetheless, the maiden voyage of the Sea Maid was awesome fun and it looks great!!!

Nice work! Besides looking like a nascar race on the water, not bad. :) Little tweak and you'll be F1 in no time.

How come it overheated? No water cooling on the ESC? Is it enclosed so no air cooling either?

Thanks all. It really runs well. As for overheating the ESC... Hmmm, no there is no water cooling on this ESC or the one on the Snapper. The Snapper was built for one but we had an issue with it and ended up with a non-water cooled ESC. I'm shocked now that I have yet to overheat the Snapper. Currently there is little proper ventilation on either boat. I have some mini cooling fans coming, should be here tomorrow, that should solve the problem. FYI...The transport box weighs in at 15 lb 8 oz and the boat AND box make it in at 28 lbs 3 oz. I really like these for transporting and storage. I ran the maiden voyage on 2 1800 milliampere 65C batteries I bought for the Snapper to see how long they would run it. I'm looking at from 4000-5800 milliampere single battery packs for the final power source. Maybe one more run on my 1800 twin pack once I get it ventilated better. I'm glad you liked it. I was starting to wonder.

I'll have to get to Fort Wayne in the spring and hang with you and Derek one Saturday. Do some boating and flying.

Just a short video from the point of view of a passenger in the center seat of my 1/6th scale Sea Maid boat. I am quite impressed with the quality considering this was taken with the $30.00 Action Camera Derek and I both bought one of a few weeks ago.

Well, it is supposed to be the middle of December here in Indiana but the weather does not seem to realize that. Which is fine with me. Yesterday, on the 12th, we broke the old record with a 67 degree high. I had plenty of other projects in the works that I could have occupied myself with but I knew I would have kicked myself in a few days if I didn't make one more trip to the park. So I loaded up my Sea Maid boat and my wife and I headed out. It was great. A bit windy for my skill level at flying...but not for boating. Please enjoy our latest short video. I have many stills as well that I'll see about sorting through and post a few later.
