Crisis Averted :)

Post by Graham Lawrie »

Went to the toilet and heard an alarm from my charger . Rushed to the scene to see two packs smoking. Quick disconnect and threw them out the skylight window into the back garden . I never leave charging unattended, this was a very near 5 minute disaster :)

Won't be this lucky again :(

Your very lucky that you were in the area to here the alarm. It could of been your whole mancave instead of just the floor.

Not very old packs. The only thing i can think to cause it was one was still warm after a flight. Lost all three packs. Watched the next pack charge and it was fine:)

Lucky save Graham.
I guess my paranoia that makes me let my packs cool before charging is justified.

Certainly was Lee:) getting paranoid now:)

Have there been any cases of batteries igniting when stored? I am guessing yes? Thinking about metal storage containers now:)

Very lucky! Makes you think twice about charging safety.
But I wish you knew what caused it. The idea of pack spontaneously catching fire give me the chills.

Derek has often cautioned me about this very possibility and I truly DO listen to the voice of experience (and not just the many voices in my head LOL) but this puts a face to it, as it were. I normally charge in the garage on a sheet of steel. This will be improved before spring and I'll have a smoke detector near by too so an issue like this will be very easily heard in our modest house even with the garage door shut. Thanks for sharing.

I religiously watch charging, this was a rest break of less than 5 minutes. I have got some heat protective sheets from work used in High Voltage substations and electrical panels. I am going to make a box to charge in, no more Lipo safe bags, and when not in use i am going to put all 30+ batteries i have in an ammo box:)

Wow. Glad you were able to get to it quickly and get it outside without further incident. I need to work on my storage and charging setup here at home. Thinking cinder block layout with block or fire resistant back plate for storage, either in the basement or the garage. Make an umbilical type charging cord set (main and balance) to be able to charge and leave the packs in their cubbies.

Its certainly made me think about my storage strategy Paul. Had i been a couple of minutes later the house would be up:(

I am going for lined metal storage and hope it will contain my paranoia:)
