This week was a hard one at work.
We have been preparing to turn one of the hulls.
It was very successful. Our boss gave us the rest of the week off :D
Here is the final roll after lots of prep.

Spent all this week squashed into the bow of the Yacht welding.
Got very hot, sweaty, choked with fumes, electrocuted, burnt by sparks (arms are covered in blisters for molten aluminium, even through my welding jacket) and a bad back.
Set my trousers on fire, right by my family jewels. Only realised when they started to get hot :D
But its the weekend :D going to a wedding tomorrow, and next week, only work monday to wednesday yoo hoo. :D

Nice one:)
Welding is extremely bad for your health:( Trust me, i have done masses:) I once welded a jaw crusher in a quarry, lying on my back , overhead on an "H"-beam. Slag fell off inside my boilersuit and i was wearing Ron Hills:( Nylon melted on them and left me with a scar on my arse to this day:) LOL . Couldnt move as i was on my back and there was a 40ft drop if i did:)

The vertical welds, left and right of your index finger, who did them?

Not me Graham.
The only welds i did in those photos, are the two overhead welds on the right, in the second photo.

My boss put up a video of a four week time lapse.
Interesting to see the progress.

That's amazing, Lee! It's cool that the boss put up the camera to get the time lapse. Some bosses wouldn't. It's very cool to see the skin getting put in place and then real cool to see the rotation.

I can weld steel (self taught) but I've heard that there is a special method and procedure for welding aluminum. I've never tried it.

Great great progress on the build!!!

that's funny, Graham! I had to scroll back up to see the picture and I think you are right. If he had little pointy things coming from his eyes, he'd surely fit the description, lol

The difference between Steel and Aluminium, is the speed Derek.
Techniques are similar, but you just have to be a lot quicker, which can lead to mistakes.
I have now started doing TIG welding on the boat, as well as MIG, after spending a week teaching myself.
More pics to come.

Some more good news. We have another order for a new boat, starting in Jan. So thats another two years work right there :)

Nice one Lee:) you will enjoy TIG welding, when you get good at it on aluminium, then you can repair your bikes:)

Made the steps for the cabin.
Marine plywood, curved to give a flat surface even when the boat is listing over.

Making the two rudders.
After a weeks work, making these, the owner decided he want composite ones instead :(
Well its his money :D

Image

Image

Welding in bearing housings for the rudders. At 1500 euros a pop, you don't want to screw this bit up :D

Image

Image

This is the keel for the monohull.
We made the moulds in house, and I had to make the bolts to screw it all together.
Moving two tonnes of lead into position, was hard work, and dangerous for the toes :D

A new boat arrived for repairs, after running aground.
It was lucky not to sink.

Had some new employees arrive at the factory a couple of weeks ago.

Sadly, the little tiger didn,t make it. Not sure why, but we found him dead in his bed   RIP little tiger

And me hard at work.

Here is a rendering of what the boat will look like.
