In the end, all I know is that my Dad and I will register and that will be that. We know that we are safe and responsible hobbyists. We've been flying safe and having fun. We'll continue to fly safe and have fun. The only difference is that there will be a small registration number on our planes. Life goes on and I just hope (leap of faith) that the irresponsible hobbyists wise up and fly safe.

That's about right stambo. Not everyone is going to register with the ama simply because they don't want to or because they don't know about the ama. This is going to be the same issue with the faa registration.

I can't see how this can work.
If I had criminal or idiot intentions I would just copy the registration number from a legit aircraft and put it on mine.
If anyone official asks me for my registration number, it's right there on the aircraft.
If I go and do something stupid and crash and hurt someone, I just walk away and let someone else carry the can.

This will prevent nothing. Idiots will fly without registering and even those that do register will not take the time to read through any educational material provided at the site. It will be treated as the User Agreement that everyone zips by as they click Accept.
This will solve very little. Most "incidents" do not involved a recovered sUAS. They are reports by a pilot that they saw something they think was a sUAS. The flight ends uneventfully and there is nothing to be done in terms of finding the sUAS, the pilot, or otherwise. The few times a sUAS is recovered there may or may not be a registration number on it, it may or may not be readable if it is there, it may or may not be current if there (how many people will sell or give away their model without removing the number?), etc.
It is $5 per pilot, renewable every 3 years. Now. Think that's going to remain? Don't bet on it. Normally this registration in the full scale world is per plane. Second step, per sUAS registration. They will probably keep it at $5 per, but they might initiate with a price reduction to $2/sUAS. Then it will start creeping up. Then they'll make it a point of sale registration instead of honor system (honor system for those buying from non-dealers, in parts or custom building). Then they'll require flight control makers to disable flight control until the user registered by hooking it up to a PC or Tablet. Then it will be a per transfer fee instead of an annualized per device fee, since devices are bought and sold so often. This has so much potential for abuse it isn't even funny. And the masses will support it all because we are geeky kooks with glorified toys using them to cause mischief or worse, as far as they are concerned.
At the moment non-citizens can't register their sUAS. I haven't read yet it there is provision for this, but it seems that at the moment there is a gaping problem for international and non-citizen residents where they can not legally fly a registerable RC model. For a hobby filled with international events held here in the US, that is a very bad thing.
The AMA will be compelled to support this and encourage their members to comply. Both because they want to maintain their status as a community based organization under the 2012 law that was supposed to prevent anything like this registration scheme from being implemented. And also because the insurance provider will mandate it in order for the AMA, member clubs, and individual members to remain covered.
The AMA was, for all intents and purposes, completely ignored by the FAA and the task force group that came up with the recommendations for the FAA on this. The AMA, and us members by extension, mean zero to the powers that be on this. They care about Google, and Amazon, and commercial/industrial users, and the bellyaching full scale pilots associations. The AMA spent a couple million in legal and lobbying efforts this past year probably. Google alone probably spends that per week. Amazon maybe every month. And they make contributions direct and indirect, unlike the AMA. Quite simply, we do not matter because we are small time, regardless of our membership roles, how long we've been at it, or any of the good we do in our communities.
I'm very seriously upset over this. Yet another hobby being taxed and regulated for no good reason by morons wanting to placate the masses and big money corporate interests and make a buck while doing it.

Ama announced for its members to hold off on the registration. They are still working with the faa on thus issue. Ama stated to hold off until they say or February 19th which ever comes first.

I've been watching a lot of YouTube videos about the FAA Registration and I've been reading some online articles about the registration, as well. If I'm not mistaken, everything that I've watched and read have been stating that pilots of "drones" (specifically stated - multirotors) are the ones that need to register. The way that I've read the rules and the way that I understand the meaning is that the FAA Registration is for pilots of any and all drones and sUAS (drones meaning: multirotors, planes, helicopters, sUAS meaning: small unmanned aircraft systems). As long as the "model" is between 0.5lbs and 55lbs, the pilot is required to register himself/herself and then place their unique ID number on each of their "models", whether it be a multirotor, plane, or helicopter.
Is this correct?
