iKon Self Level

Post by cml001 »

Hey guys... I was messing round in the yard the other day.. Threw the SL switch to play with it... It banked hard left and backward! So I take the bird and reload my settings... Spool her back up.. Idle 1.. She's good.. Idle 2.. She's good.. Idle 3... Banking hard again... I repeat the process and all 3 are good.. What makes it unreliable like this? I spent 4 packs dialing it in and when she works you can set down the transmitter and go poor a cup of coffee & smoke a cig to come back and find her in the same spot!... Why u recon she's doin this?

Mine has done that, it could be a vibe

Are you only using SL in bank 3,

A tiny bit off in shaft level will transmit in to movement as well, after you set level. I set my shaft level with my Soko gauge and then set level and where I used to get swash movement when in SL bank now I don't get it on the bench

Any vibes at all can make the self level do strange things.

the way i did mine was to mount the brain with zeal tape (thick blue gel) velcro and a cable tie to isolate the brain from vibrations then i level the heli on the bench at the main shaft using a magnetic spirit level.
Once the heli is level, set level in the brain software. you may have to make some minor adjustments too self level in the software.

Thats what works for me anyway. ive only used it a couple of times, flip the switch and punch out. Lmao

Not a steep enough bank.. But if u were to punch collective to it at that bank she would travel.. Bout a 45。bank.. I rarely use it.. I just felt like play'n w it that day.. That's how I noticed it... But it's right most of the time.. Strange... But it has saved my bacon the on 2 occasions I needed to use it.

It almost sounds, to me, that you don't have the Ikon secured well enough. It's hard to tell without a picture.

I have the Ikon on my 600 and the SL works flawlessly. Dan mentioned, above, that he used that Zeal Tape. I've heard nothing but good things about that Zeal Tape. However, I didn't use it on mine. I have 3 layers of the 3M Heavy Duty sticky foam between the Ikon and the helicopter. Then I also have a ziptie, through a piece of rubber fuel tubing, holding the Ikon solidly in place. It's referred to as "The Milton Mod". Here is the link that I followed: http://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=282042

Also, double check that all your servo leads to the Ikon are tight and solid. I have used a thin, really thin, bead of hot glue on top of the servo leads that go to my Ikon. I wanted to make sure that they stayed in place with no vibrations....and the thin bit of hot glue can always be easily removed.

On my Warp and Gobbie, they both work flawlessly.
I have two layers of clear 3M mounting tape.
The only time I have had banking, is when I first put it on and hadn't set it up yet.
The reason it does it as the HS goes up, could be a resonant frequency of some sort.

I've got it mounted w 2 layers of 3M gel tape and an Align hook & loop strap.. It's just weird that it only banks on occasion.. I'm wondering if being that it's been in the 30's temperature wise that maybe the gel tape is stiffer making it do this.

This is the best pic & angle I have w me.. But I'm confident in the mounting... Hell I'm a much better builder than pilot. I'm going to the field and later this week and I'll give it the what for & see what happens.

On the Agile the SL works like a charm. But on the 500 I never made it work well, same issues you're having. Whats a bit curious is that my 500 is very similar in design like your bird, same mounting position and everything... Weird?

Sorry Derek you have to troll the dark side, I'm not proud, but nessecities for knowledge, you understand.

Look in the Msh brain folder on the heli freak, thread called new firmware might be a little late

it looks to me that the updates are for Windows 8. Not necessarily an update for the Brain/Ikon.

Perhaps I'm not looking in the right spot.

PS...I'm not going to hate on you for browsing HeliFreak. I've been on HeliFreak for a bit over a year now. I'm not very active on that forum because it's such a LARGE forum but it is packed will knowledge and I love the marketplace that they have.
