Something a bit more relaxing (or maybe not........)

Post by danhampson »

I've been looking at getting a fixed wing FPV platform for a while but have been unable to make a decision as to which type of aircraft to go with.
About a week ago I ordered a Falcon EVO from flyingwings.co.uk.
http://flyingwings.co.uk/fpv-uav/fpv-wi ... -wing.html.

I've made a start on the build, I've not taken many pictures so far. The air frame is assembled apart from the elevons.

I've got the airframe nearly ready for paint as it came in raw cut epo foam, I've layed down 3 coats of diluted wood glue and 2 coats of water based PU varnish, I'll be added another 3 coats of varnish before applying paint. This is then going to be finished in diluted 30 min epoxy to seal it.

I have most of the electronic for this build or at least for some LOS/short range fpv fun, the parts so far are

Frsky delta 8 receiver (new but temporary will be replaced with LRS very soon)
Rc timer 30A esc with bec 3s/4s
Sunnysky 2212 1400kv motor (I've not got packs for this bird yet and am leaning towards 4s) I've also got some cobra 2204 2300kv's knocking around. Opinions expressed please
Fatshark 600tvl camera
Lumenier 200mw vtx
Savox servos (forgot the number but fast, 450 heli size)
OSD with RTH (I haven't purchased this yet)

It looks like a real sweet wing. I love wing FPV flying. I don't see anything about a wingspan nor an AUW. I'm a bit concerned that the motor you have chosen may not be enough for this wing (with FPV gear and 4S pack). Nonetheless, I'm eager to see the finished product and I'm eager to hear your thoughts on a fixed wing FPV experience.

On the Web site there are 2 power systems they sell one is a 2212 1400kv and the other is a 2212 2200kv. They class the 1400kv as an endurance setup boasting 40 min flight times from a 4000mah s3 pack, the 2200 kv is classed as a sport setup, more speed less flight time
I'm planning on using stuff that I have in my parts bin and i just happened to have 6 of the sunny sky 2212 1400kv.
If I find it a bit under powered then I will switch the 1400kv for something faster.

Nice wing Dan.
I have had a wing I cut two years ago, just sitting here. Need to get it running.

i got chance to a bit more work on the wing today.

After a conversation with a friend of mine he suggested laminating the wing in fiber reinforced tape and then colouring with packing tape.

I didnt take any shots if it in just fiber tape, i am very happy with the way its tuned out.

Yes, that fiber tape and packing tape will make the wing nearly indestructible. It should take several beatings...hopefully you don't have many, lol. The wing looks great!!!

That's one wild looking bird you got there Dan :o . I'm impressed and enjoy your pics. Cant wait to see videos of that bird in the air. Good luck on the rest of build.

Ive made the elevon linkages up and fitted the control horns.

All the electronics are installed and ready for setup, ive embedded all the wiring in the wings to keep the build clean. I will be securing the components in the wings with some fiber tape after ive 90ed the servos and set the linkage lengths.

Let's hope it performs as well as it looks.

I've set all the electronics up. Haha fixed wing is super simple.

The throws are setup as per the manual with some expo on a 3 pos switch (30/35/40)
FPV system is working beautifully.

It a beautiful morning here these a 8mph wind so I may go for a LOS maiden.
Batteries are charging.........

The maiden went well even though the conditions weren't idea, so now its time to install some stabilisation ive opted to use a naze type board for this as ive got an acro version in the parts bin.

The first problem was how to mount the board to the aircraft, my solution to this was to line the naze board up in the electronics bay and poke some small holes in the foam through the naze mounting holes. Then i CA'ed some stand off's (threaded at one end) in the holes.

hopefully i'll get time to rewire later, which should be straight forward as my rx runs in ppm mode (and gives out rssi, but thats for a later date).

That's pretty much how I have my Naze installed on my wing. The only "real" difference is that my Naze is on the outside of the wing...yours is inside and will be more protected.

Ugh....I sure wish the weather was flyable here. It's just so cold and windy. Yuck!!!

The weather has turned here to. That's why I thought I would start playing with the naze.
I've just found this in the parts bin. Looks like it's time to order a minim osd.

I've also wired the naze board up to have a play with, this board will be replaced with a board with mag and baro sensors.
I'm going to try to do the naze computer setup later today.
