Who needs CG when you have a NAZE32

Post by Stambo »

After several failed attempts to get my big coreflute (coroplast) wing flying properly I have finally given up.
Instead I built this.
Sorry, no build pics as once I got started I just did not want to stop.

Everything I used I had lying around in boxes, including the 10mm thick foam that was intended for another project.
It is stabilised by a Naze32 and running ppm to a D4R2.
The build was based on this one from ProjectFlightDesign on Youtube.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpjzNjn ... GA&index=1
It's powered by a 2826 propdrive 1000kv motor, AE30A Turnigy ESC, 8045 prop and a 4s 1400 MultiStar (miniquad battery).
This thing will lift straight up off the ground so I can't wait to get some flight time with it and then hang some FPV gear on it.
The CG is out a bit for sure but I am hoping to fix that with the extra weight of some FPV gear and a mobius.
And please don't pick on my tape job, it's my first time and it's the wrong sort of tape. :D
Maiden flight to come. :D

Quickest from start of building to flying I have ever done.
This thing is fun but a bit intimidating at the same time.
It is so much faster than the AXN, way less time for decisions as you will see in the video.
I think a bit of expo on the elevator may be in order.
Had a couple of "scream like a girl" moments and the second landing left a bit to be desired but I am going to enjoy this for sure. :D

Wow that flew amazing stambo considering the cg is off.

I look forward to some on board footage it will be interesting to see how stable the name makes it for filming

Great lil flyer, Stambo! I think you're right that the elevator could use a bit of expo, lol. As for the color scheme....no worries....as long as you can differentiate between top and bottom, that's all that counts. Very cool!!!

I am curious if having the Naze off to the right of center is ok. It seems to me that the stabilization might be heavier in one direction more than the other. However, if you didn't have any issues with it, I'd see no reason to change it, lol

Thanks guys, although I think I have to give credit to the Naze for the way it flys. :)
I don't think I could have done that well without it and knowing the CG was off, I was too chicken to switch it off.

It's gonna take some learning or more to the point unlearning to fly it.
After getting used to using the rudder on the AXN I now find myself trying to use it on this.
I am a little excited about how fast this is gonna be, I still have not pushed it over 3/4 throttle, not to mention the 9" prop that I can fit to it.
After 10 minutes of total flight time, my battery is still at 15v so I am expecting to head for 15 minutes in the air.
Time for another voltage sensor build. :)

I was initially concerned about that too, when I destroy this one and make another (I am sure it will happen :)) I will probably rotate the battery sideways to get the weight further forwards and put the Naze in the centre.
Having said that, in theory no matter where on the aircraft it is, the angles remain the same so it should make very little difference.

As for being my first successful scratch built airplane and going from concept to flying in about 4 days I am really happy with it.
Now I just need to learn how to set fixed wing PIDs.

No doubt... Concept to flying in 4 days is awesome! Definitely something to be proud of.

Nice Stambo.
I love the flying wings. Got one sitting here that needs finishing.

Some on board footage from yesterday afternoon.
Was a little breezy so it's not so smooth but that could also be the pilot and the PIDs on the FC.
I have no idea how to set fixed wing PIDs so let the learning commence. :)
I have also found that as soon as I let the throttle off, it heads straight down, so I have to work on that too.
Sorry about the round and round in circles but with the size of my property it gets from one side to the other so quickly.
I have to learn to go away further and come back, or fly from further down the property. :)

Just watched this on YouTube. Great flight stambo.

The manual for my kit talks about setting the reflex when setting the elevon linkages up which equates to a slight amount of up elevator the reflex is setup with the bottom profile of the wing giving it a few degrees up elevator I think it's around 3 degree's.

While I've been researching cleanflight on fixed wing it's recommended to half the stock pids as a starting point. I'll try to find the video I watched where a guy sets up a traditional fixed wing craft (aileron, elevator and rudder but a lot of it is relevant.

Yeah I discovered the reflex thing last night after the flight and did some adjustments.
And I would say it has to be done mechanically rather than from the radio otherwise the Naze would see it as stick input.
I also have the CG a lot closer now too.

Yeah it should be mechanical. I centered my servos and then adjusted the linkage until the elevon had the stated reflex. Now that I've got a FC on I'm going to 0 the sub trim in my radio and re center the servos in cleanflight so the reflex should be the same as stated in the manual.

I have yet to hit full throttle, and the motor is well capable of a 9 or 10 inch prop. :)
I have to say at the moment I am a little intimidated by the power.
It gets from one side of my place to the other in the blink of an eye.

Time to resurrect an oldish thread and my flying wing.
Not long after I built this thing I needed a Naze32 for Jacobs quad so I took it from the wing and parked it in my model room to gather dust.
I have another Naze now but that is reserved for another project.
Recently I got thinking about the 4 KK2s I have lying around so I have decided to put openaero 2 on one and try it out.
I thought the Naze32 was overkill for stabilizing a wing so it will be interesting to see how capable a KK2 is for the task.
I set up a KK2 last night with a motor and 2 servos, looking good so far.
I am using PPM from the D4r2 so only one wire.
This also means I can use 8 channels from a 4 channel rx.
I will have to use a BEC as well as the power from the ESC as the KK2 apparently does not like servo noise on the m1 output.
Watch this space. :D
