Blackout 360 Build

Post by Stambo »

Dry fit of my new Blackout 360.
Been wanting something like this for a while and this came up at half the normal price.
I have no idea what I will power it with or what flight controller I will use but I have a bunch of 1000kv motors and some ESCs to fit them and I can't decide between a Naze32 or a crius aio with all the GPS bits to automate it a bit.
I know the crius is only 8 bit but it has the compass and GPS so I can program RTH.
Hmm decisions.

Started the build proper on the weekend, got the motors mounted, ESCs soldered to the PDB and the naze32 flashed to cleanflight and hooked up.
Plugged in a battery and the smoke stayed in, always a good thing.
Hooked up to the configurater and checked a few settings, went to the motors tab and only one worked.
These Multistar 30A ESCs had been working flawlessly on a previous build running simonk firmware but I decided to flash them to the latest blheli before using them on this build. Seems this was a mistake.
I decided to flash them back to the current Simonk firmware and before trying with the Naze32 I tested them with my servo tester.
All worked fine so back to the Naze32 and cleanflight.
Now 3 of them work, the 4th one baffles me.
I have tried swapping the servo cables to different positions and swapping motors.
It is always the same ESC with a problem.
I tried reflashing that one ESC and the results are no different.
It still works fine on the servo tester.
I have even tried setting a radio to have 4 throttle channels just for testing.
I am having trouble understanding why it would work with the servo tester but not with other methods.
I may have to take my oscilloscope home and see what is different between the servo tester output and the rx and Naze32.
I do have a set of HK Blue series I can fit but I hate not knowing why this one does not work, and they are already soldered to the PDB.
Any thoughts and ideas appreciated. :)

I will probably post this on a few other forums also, get as many ideas as I can. :)

Check BLheli to see if that when you read the ESC,s there should be a master and the other 3 are slaves to that one:)
I had a similar issue on flashing, but i cant show you as i have lost the hard drive on my laptop and all my info, pictures, programmes etc etc.........

Too late now, I managed to short one of the other ESCs and my servo tester out with my scope probes causing the magic smoke contained in these devices to escape.
Needless to say with the magic smoke no longer contained, these devices no longer function. :)

On a better note, I removed those ESCs and fitted some HK blue series ones that I also had lying around.
I am being a bit more critical with this build because in theory it is going together once and will stay that way. :)

I stuck on the top frame and flew it around my workshop briefly this morning.
Now to start adding FPV gear and then a gimbal and camera.
I bought the Firefly 6s which is supposedly 4k capable, time will tell how good it is but so far I like it.
At less than 1/4 the cost of a Gopro it will have to do for now. :)

Here is the video.
First FPV flight of my Blackout 360 recorded with my new firefly 6s.
I have some balancing and tuning to do but it flies so I am happy.

Very cool, Stambo! You've gotta be happy with that for a maiden flight!!!

What's on that bracket looking thing on the rear? Is that a bit of aluminum holding up the GPS, or something?

The quad looks great!!!

Thanks Derek, yeah I am happy with it. I want some better motors and props though when I can afford it.
These ones are gonna take a bit of time to balance as they are not high quality motors and they are quite used.

That bracket is a coloured plexiglas type of plastic, I bent it by warming it up with a heat gun.
I think it is still too close to my other antennae because it takes quite a while to acquire satellites.
No big deal until I start flying a bit further as it is only for the OSD.
I will try putting it further away and if that works I will have to make a different bracket and extend the wires.

Just got Inav flashed on to the OMnibus F4 V2 that I got for the Blackout 360.
Hooked up the RX and GPS, inside I get 11 sats, outside I get 16 so far, this M8N GPS is far superior to the M6N I have on the Nano Talon.
Lucky I got 2 of them. :D
Time to strip the Blackout and do some re configuring.
Looking forward to seeing what it can do with a more capable FC.
