No, T-28 wasn't me. Friend of mine though. Bad crash.

He wrote it off. Has another on order.

Those normally come with an AS3X 6-channel rx in them. His sound module needed two more channels, though, so he put a 8ch spektrum rx in there with a sat (maybe two, can't recall). The sound module cut out early in the flight (did the motor sputter out sound) and was silent until that alarm came on. The alarm was a lost model alarm that comes on two minutes after the loss of signal.

He says the Rx pack was charged up and good to go. No issues on the main pack either. His testing when he got the pile home indicates that the "new" 8ch rx has a fault in it because the sat(s) light was flickering.

He was very pissed over the whole deal.

They're out of production? I know he ordered a new one and I know of someone else that just got one. They're a great plane. Large, well-constructed wings. Handles grass fields great. Fly very well with the As3X in them (little skittish on straight Rx).

That nose and cowl part was burried completely in the mud out there. Prop pieces were probably embedded 8 inches or more into the ground.

Re: Paul's Flight Log

Post by pvolcko »

My club voted in a FPV quad racing event to happen on Oct 15. First of its kind for us.

So, I hit the field today to get in some more fpv practice. I still am sucking badly at altitude control. I really don't know how people do it. I need to install electo shockers for when I get higher than 10ft and lower than 2 ft.

My big problem is in turns. If I'm going slow and holding relatively flat attitude, I can hold altitude fine through the turn. But if I try to do it with any kind of speed, equivalent to a higher banked turn with a heli, I end up climbing 20 ft without even thinking about it. I'm doing normal control input like I would with a plane or heli. Aileron over to establish the bank. Slight rudder to keep horizon from dropping out of view. Pull elevator to bring it through the turn. Aileron to hold the bank (my Vortex, for some reason, likes to bank over when I feed in rudder, I haven't a clue why). And feed throttle through the turn to maintain speed and keep it from falling to the ground. I do all this and depending on how tight I try to make the turn I end up either 10 ft higher (very tight) or 30 ft higher (low radius, high speed) at the end of the turn.

Going to try out a sim to see what happens in that. Any suggestions or recommendations?

Battery after battery after battery............
Sim time can teach you the basics but altitude control comes with actual flight time.
All quads are different too, so what works for me may not work for you.
Mostly comes down to power and setup.
A more powerful quad may not need as much extra throttle input etc.
Quads are not like planes or helis for FPV, watch the good guys, they are constantly working the throttle. :)

So I've been putting on more FPV flights. It's getting better. I think my issue at the moment is I'm trying to go too fast. I don't have the altitude control skills for moving around fast yet. I lowered the angle on the camera this weekend while flying amongst some trees and I was able to control altitude much better, albeit at the sacrifice of speed.

Got a couple heli flights in too. Ended up digging a main into the ground on an autorotation landing. Chipped some servo gear teeth. So I gotta start repairing things. All out of flyable helis. ;)

Other news:
- Ordered up an inductrix and fpv kit for it along with some faster motors and extra batteries. Tiny Whoop! Also ordered up a set of lcd screen type goggles and a VRX for them. If I can come up with a good combo I'll order up one or two more sets of everything for doing some indoor FPV racing/flying training over the winter.

- I fly the votrex 285 for my outdoor fpv/racing. It's driving me nuts with the folding arms always folding in on the slightest bounces off the ground. So I ordered up a Vortex 250 Pro! I know there are much cheaper ways to go, but I do not have the time for building and configuring and setting up from scratch. I want pre-build, I like the transmitter programming system the Vortex quads have, etc. so I stuck with it. I'll keep the 285 as a backup for a while, but will likely end up selling it along with the frame parts kits I have for it.

This is what I got and I ma really impressed with the video quality for the size of the camera and 25mw tx.
Been looking at the Chaoli motors from Banggod too, they are supposed to be pretty good.

Another couple weeks gone, another update to the thread:

- Oct 15 was my club's first ever drone race event. The guy who runs one of the local multigp chapters got in touch with me a while back wanting to do a race at our field. I took it upon myself to make it happen. It took longer than I had hoped, including a proposal and discussion at a club meeting and holding a vote. But it finally got approved and we held it. A few people at the club volunteered to help out with registration, cooking, etc. and John, the multigp chapter lead, got together the gates and flags and took care of organizing the race rounds and heats. We ended up with 9 pilots racing and a sizable crowd of spectators (12-15 I'd say). We ran 3 rounds with 2 heats in each round. After the three rounds the top five pilots raced a final race. Results can be found here: http://www.multigp.com/races/view/4516/ ... -the-stars. I had a lot of fun, as did all the pilots. Learned some things that we can hopefully apply next time to make the event even better.

- I picked up a Vortex 250 Pro a few days before the race. I *love* this quad. It is soooo much nicer than the Vortex 285. Very fast. I crashed this thing full bore into a flag pole and it just chipped a little bit off the front left arm. 4mm thick CF arms. 2mm frames with Al standoffs and pieces of 2mm reinforcement in key areas (making a 4mm section of frame plus the 4mm arms in spots). This thing is a nimble tank. No more arms folding back on ground contact. If it crashes and flips upright, 9 out of 10 times I can take off and keep going without issue.

- Been flying the helis too. Botched an auto-rotation landing with the Trex 700 and stripped some servo gears so that's on the bench. I fixed up the KSE 700, but botched an auto-rotation landing with it on Tuesday so need to replace some servo arms and check things for stripped gears. I have a ton of stuff on the bench right now, so I'm going to be spending some time getting the fleet back up and going before winter hits. The bad landings were both with low head speed in the final float/flare down, so no major damage in either case, luckily. I will say, the Goblin 700 KSE (three blades) is a pig to auto-rotate. Goblins are normally tough to auto-rotate. The belt driven tails seem to rob the head speed more than TT. But the three blades are that much worse. Head speed bleeds off like crazy at the bottom. Really need to drop it in and flare spool it up to get a good landing with them. TRex 700, by comparison, is a dream. Floaty. Easy to spool up. Etc.

- I got a new plane! Freewing F/A-18 90mm EDF. Picked it up used on a Facebook group for $250. Brand new plane. Never flown. Did a basic setup and taxied it around the field and spooled it up to full speed without taking off to see if it would be able to lift off the grass field. Looks like it shouldn't be an issue. Need to do some more setup and get the thrust vectoring working then will be doing a maiden.

Here's a video of one of the runs made by the guy who ended up winning, Mark Ristango. We were running three laps for the race heats.

Winter's coming on here too, Graham. Getting dark around 6pm now. Cold temps. Rain. We had a long fall flying season last year, but thinking we aren't going to get lucky again this year.
