Whats the story with my Goblin 420.

Post by Lee »

So as some of you know, I swapped my Goblin 570 for a Goblin 420.

My 570 is 4 years old but only has around 40 flights on it.
It was in mint condition, with Lynx upgrades.
This was the deal offered to me.
My 570, with two sets of packs. No FBL system ( as i would transfer my Ikon to the new 420)
For a 420, just been built for a magazine photo shoot (5 flights) with two packs.

Not a bad deal eh?

Well i said good bye to my 570 (sad day) looking forward to my new 420 arriving.
When i got it, everything look good in the pack. Then the trouble started.
I noticed a radius arm looked slightly twisted, so i checked the other. It was twisted too!!!!
So i decide this was enough for me to do a full rebuild to check everything.
This was bought from a reputable shop. I called to ask whats up, and was told that it fell of a table in the shop, but nothing was damaged.

So i wont bore you with the rest. I'll just list what I found wrong with this "NEW" heli.

1) Blade grip arms bent.
2) Thrust bearings crushed, and soaked in thread lock from applying too much to feather shaft.
3) Radius arms twited.
4) Servo tray brass insert stripped out.
5) Tail feather shaft bent.
6) Tail shaft damaged and bearings, due to wrong instillation of tail side plates.
7) All screws drenched in thread lock. numerous screws where already stripped out.Had to heat and cut screws out of feather shaft.
Frame screws had to be heated up and those that where stripped, luckily, I got them out with vice grips.
8) Tail blades cracked and fixed with super glue.

So, not so new.
If it had been a beginner buying this, I would have said send it back. But as I did a full strip down, I knew from experience that the damage was easily fixed with new parts.
So after explaining all the issues to the owner of the shop, he sent all new parts out to me.
He is adamant that this heli had only 5 flights and had fallen of the table at the shop.
Well thats either a fricking high table. or he is full of BS.
It was 100% from a crash, with the way the head was twisted.

Anyway, I finally got it all sorted, and it flew like a dream........
Until the Ikon died, luckily on the ground.

Or thats what I though. Spoke to Ikon support, and after a few emails back and forth, they said they would sell me a new one at trade price, as mine was out of warranty.
Cool. Just before i packed it up, I gave it one last try by doing a full reset, and what do you know, the bugger worked.
Turns out something it my setting had changed to stop the tail servo from i initialising.
Check on my other Ikon with the same config, same problem.
Not sure what happened, as one day it was flying fine, then the next, tail servo was dead.
Only thing I changed was a GOV setting, but this cause the tail servo to stop.

Well now it seems all is good in the world again. So let go flying...... Oh damn, its raining LOL :D

No. Servos were a new set of MKS HV93s and a HV9780 tail servo.
Great servos, but they buzz incessantly, when you're not touching the sticks. Not a problem when you're flying, but annoying as F... when your doing bench work.
I tend to unplug them once they are set up in the Ikon, while I do everything else.
I was offered BK servos instead of these. Wish I had gone with those, as I know they don't buzz as much as these.

Off to meet my mates in Marbella tomorrow for a fly :D

The story gets worse.
My friend spotted a crack in the boom.
On closer inspection, there are four hairline cracks along the boom, and one has had superglue put in it!!!
As it was in the black painted area, it was hard to see, until in the sunlight.
I have sent pictures to the shop owner, and he accused me of breaking it, and since sunday, has ignored all my messages, and pictures of the damage.
What an A hole.

Wow. Wouldn't ever do business with that shop again. You got screwed on the deal, that's for sure.

And Synergy has great stuff, but the problem here isn't SAB, it's the crap shop trying to pawn off broken merch and getting all defensive when you call them out on it.

Hey Lee, sorry to here that. It's a shame that our society is all about screwing people over and getting away with it just to make a buck. Doesn't make a different which side of the pond you're on. I'm with Paul and Graham... I wouldn't do business with that shop again and I'm a big time believer in Karma.

From the owners perspective he may not be the person who did the repair work. Usually it’s just my opinion but you get one shot at bring up issues. When you keep going back you start to look like a scammer. He doesn’t know you from a hole in the wall and just sees someone coming back for more and more parts. It’s best if you can wrap it up all at once and if you miss anything just suck it up. Just my $.02

It was his personal heli, which he said was immaculate. He is the owner of the biggest shop in Spain.
I didn't keep going back, he refused to answer my emails and messages.
All other components were replaced at the same time, eventually.
The tail crack was spotted before the first flight. I have five witnesses to this fact.
If you are in the right, you don't deliberately ignore someones emails.
I sent multiple whatsapp messages, saw he was online, and had received and read them, but still no answer.
Only a guilty person would act in this manner.
So as far as scammers are concern, he is definitely one.

Finally bought a new boom and took her out for a spin.
Well, for two minutes anyway.
Just got her hovering, then made one circuit.
Bang!!! full neg and into the dirt she went :(
Both blades done, feather shaft, and canopy.
Cant say it was before or after the crash, but one servo had a sheared main gear.
Only reason I can see it going negative was from the servo breaking in the air.

Anyway not too much damage, and now ALZRC have the Devil 420, I can get spares for the Goblin much cheaper.
ALZRC Blades $19
SAB blades $54 :0
