Gas Engine to Electric Motor Conversion help needed please

Post by Derek »

I'd like you guys to take a look at this "West 52 v1" gas aero engine:

http://www.sussex-model-centre.co.uk/sh ... sp?id=2123

I need some help finding a suitable electric version of this gas engine. I've been looking at some of the Dr Mad Thrust motors at Hobby King..reading the reviews for a few motors. I just have no idea what I should be looking for in the "electric" section that would be comparable to the above gas engine.

I'd appreciate any help, as always!

I am by no means any kind of expert on this, I did find that the 8.3cc engine is around a 50 class engine. Grayson hobbies carries glow conversions and this is the link to the 50 class.

Thanks for that, Gerald! I was just looking at that exact same motor. I've bought from Grayson Hobby before and I love their products, their customer service, and their user friendly website.

That motor is a 650kv motor and is rated for 4-7 cell lipo's. I was thinking about a 6S setup. I probably won't be ready to talk about the project that I have in mind for this motor until after the new year. I have a thought in my head and I think I'll need to actually draw out some planes for this one, lol.

I'm going to do some more checking and asking around but I appreciate your comment!

So have you already got this motor in a plane/heli Derek. I can't answer your question coz I'm thick, but I'm curious... Haha

That's a big motor, I would not have know how big if I did not buy this nitro Alpha which has a 40 class engine in it and it is huge! that engine is even bigger!

You simply can't answer my question because you are inexperienced, and there's no shame in that, lol. Being curious....no shame in that either, lol.

I have a project in mind, based on a plane that runs the above gas engine, but I want it electric. I email'd the company that sells the "plane in question" and, fortunately for me, I got a reply back saying that they have been doing some R & D on an electric version of the plane and the guy gave me the exact electric components that they were using for testing. How cool is that?

So....the hunt for the conversion is over. Now, I just have to save up some pennies and nickels and a few quarters to fund the project, lol.

Yes Gerald, it is quite a big motor. I have Grayson Hobby's .46 sized conversion in my Blue Cub STOL...currently running on 3S and it flies beautifully. And....you know me....I'm always up to something, lol. The "wheels are always turning"....they may not always turn smoothly, but they are always turning, lol.

I think it's brilliant how you guys can make these planes out of next to nothing and have such good fun with them... Must be a great feeling

Derek the conversion is roughly 750w= 1hp. So 2200 is about right:)

lol...no, I'm afraid the Albatross is better off left where it is....in the past as a learning lesson. I had high hopes for it but the plane had other intentions.

I'll start a new specific thread on the upcoming project that relates to this thread.
