My Goblin 570 Rebuild

Post by Lee »

This is going to take a while, but I have made a start.
Looks like I may be able to save a lot of $$$$
My friend that owns the Surfboard repair shop is helping my fix the tail boom.
I will document the procedure. If it all goes well, we may offer this service to anyone wanting to repair there goblin boom too.
Mine is probably the worst a boom could be. So if we can fix this one, we can fix any.
He has repaired MTB frames, wheels, Lambourgini body panels etc So a little Goblin tail boom should be easy.
Here is what it looks like before.

Here we have wetted down the loose fibres on the inside to give a solid base to work from.
We are also repairing the Canopy. Thats pretty straight forward, as it was a clean cut through about an inch in front of the canopy mount.

Glad you are getting it repaired Lee:)

Cameron is good at getting repairs done with his crashes as well:) As he says he is "agricultural" in his approach so it does not need to be perfect:) I would imagine if your friends repairs are at that level then it should be good:)

Cant wait to see the final product. Look daunting to say the least. The hard part will be getting the boom into spec in regards to length. Maybe make a blank and recast the tail, then paint to your liking.

It will be free. But I will buy a new one anyway, then keep this as a spare.

We have aligned the two halves with some carbon strips.

Used an aluminium tube to keep everything straight.

Rebuild it like a jigsaw. It fitted together again quite well. Even if it was a touch out, the rear tail block is adjustable.

It will be stronger than the original. My friend makes carbon fibre parts for Lambourginis, Racebikes and Hangliders, I'm hoping a simple carbon boom should be an easy task :D

Nice rebuild Lee, it's looking good mate, even if you never use it it's an experience and learning curve rebuilding it back up again... That crash will always stick in my mind I think..

+1

I would almost think it would be easier to create a mold and make a new one then repair the old one.

problem is ... you need a new one to make the mold! Lol .... and setting up the Aluminium slider would be a mission too .... as it changes the tail angle of attack ... you get it wrong and you get a tail strike with the main blades and BOOM .. all over rover!

you could make the mold to include a reinforced CF slider section .... like the new Gobby 700 Competition one.
