FPV virgin looking for tips to success

Post by danhampson »

I've pulled the trigger on an FPV setup to install on my 250 quad, my FPV setup should be with me and installed on Monday and i will be loosing my FPV virginity as soon as the weather permits so i'm looking for any hints and tips that you seasoned FPV pilots can give me to make my first FPV flight a success.

Fly it somewhere with a lot of contrast on the ground. A flat field or beach is difficult to tell when you start to move too quickly.
Have something to focus on. A tree, or something. Fly at about head height and try to keep the object in the middle of your view. Fly slowely around it in a circle, keeping it centred.
Good luck :D

Oh and fly in stability mode for the first few flights

im going to use the football field that i fly my helis at, its pretty chewed up ate the moment part grass, part mud and part sand. I could use the goals as a reference point instead of a tree, so my inputs would be rudder and ail at first?

Yeh goalposts would be perfect. You can centre the quad between them, then move sideways from post to post. Then fly through the middle and turn around and come back :)

Simple advice from me is keep moving forwards, slow but steady.
If you are moving forwards you see what you are moving towards and can avoid it.
Try not to drift sideways, obviously you cannot see what is beside you.
I know you probably won't want do this but tune auto level LOS so that it works and use it for your first few flights.
Or have it on a switch you can get to easily as a panic button. Panic recovery = hit the switch, let go the sticks and increase the throttle. (Unless you are under something. )
Keep the first few flights nice and short, 3 or 4 minutes max, then land, relax, repeat.
Warm the goggles up before putting them on, if you put them on cold you may end up with fogged up lenses.
DON'T LEAVE THE GOGGLES SO THAT DIRECT SUNLIGHT CAN GET AT THE LENSES!!
It will burn the screen, ask me how I know. :(

I had set set the level in stability mode before I had to move the cc3d it take a bit of time. It made all the difference to stability mode. It would hover pretty much hands off, in just waiting for a break in the weather to get outside and tune it.
