SAB 700 Speed

Post by ken jackson »

Tom put his brand new just finished building yesterday high speed SAB in the air for the first time. This was the last flight of the day. Kept bumping up the throttle limits with each flight. Going to be crazy fast at 100% throttle and the recommended 14 percent blade pitch.

Very nice, the only problem for me is by the time I got it up to speed, I would not be able to see it.

+1

The sound alone is addictive I watch the video a few times just for the sound.

I'd love to see one of these things going in person. Kyle Stacy has one and was going to fly it at the RAMS helijam in Rochester, NY but something happened and it ended up going into the ground before he managed to get a single pass in. Cracked it up pretty good.

i would have thought if you piled one in going for it 100% there wouldn't be much to salvage.

Yes it is an amazing machine. I would imagine crashing at this at speed would be a very expensive venture. This bird as it sits was $3,500 US. Or was it $5,300. Can't remember now, Lol. Tom is going to work on getting the optimal forward lean (pitch) to get maximum speed. I think around 30 degrees is about right. We both agreed going up so high to gain speed was not really helping because as you come out of it to level off you loose speed. And it does get very small very fast. He was already talking about changing it to 3D instead of speed. I said at least wait till spring and fly it some more before you do that. The whole point was speed...

That sound just never gets old! My wife and I were at the IRCHA Speed Cup, last year. Just awesome!!!

Very cool video, Ken!

There was some talk, in this thread, about a Speed helicopter crashing. Here is a video that I remember seeing..

Kyle's wasn't going anywhere near full clip when it went in. He was flying away from taking off, probably about to start a climb for a stall turn to enter the first pass when it just dipped below the crest of the hill to the right side of the flight line and never came back up. Guessing some kind of electrical glitch took it out.
