i have to fight with the tail to keep it straight, i might have to mess with the tail inputs

You said the light was red, meaning rate mode not heading hold. Change the gyro gain in the TX to get it into heading hold. If you want to get it hovering in rate mode first that's fine but it looks like you need to increase the amount of gain. Even if the tail pitch wasn't centered properly it should be correcting the piro tendency. More gain should help keep it under control better.
