Re: HELP on wood hull finish

With our weather currently being little more than cool and damp, it is not conducive to the drying of paint. Luckily, the older I have gotten the more patience I have developed.
Some preliminary info on this boat is...
It is 26 inches long, 10.5 inches at the widest and 4" deep(bottom of hull to top of rear hatch)
The gas powered version I based this on is to weigh 3 pounds 7 ounces. Mine weighs 3 pounds 11 ounces fully loaded with batteries and action figure though I still have a bit of painting yet to complete. I think it feels heavier because it is so short and wide.
It has a three blade Thunder Tiger D40 x P41 Neptune prop(I just liked the way it looked and it was the correct outer diameter) driven by a S2858-2630 Brushless Inrunner (2630kv) and using a Brushless Car ESC 60A w/ Reverse...we tried a water cooled ESC for boats but could not get it to act correctly so this was just simpler.
The receiver is a OrangeRx R615X DSM2/DSMX Compatible 6Ch 2.4GHz Receiver w/CPPM which works fine with the FS-GT3B transmitters I already am familiar with that I use on my converted ATVs.
Obviously it is just simple servo control for the rudder that I just hunted around for an after market unit of "near" the recommended size from the plans that was listed as "Water Rudder Kit for Model Airplane Floats" at HobbyKing.
The seat and steering wheel I stole off a Max Steel toy go cart. The seat slides back and forth for fitting the figure.
The intention is to run the whole thing off 12 volt rechargeables. I am curious what my run time will be.
Between this boat and my BOMBER I am WAY past ready to hit the parks. I have a 1/6th scale hovercraft in the works as well that I need to get moving on. Wish me luck...and Derek's help on the electronics.

On a personal note...as far as a name??? In my near 62 years I have found my name to be unique and do not use it much online. I have REALLY liked seeing "D's Dad" in these posts so if there is no objection...that suit's me. I am VERY proud of Derek.

Hey Dad....I think you better recheck the receiver info on your boat. The OrangeRx receiver is what is in your plane. The receiver that you have in your boat is the 3 channel Frysky receiver that matches your trigger transmitter.

What can I say? Derek is right...and always has my back. Had I actually read what I cut and pasted even I would have known I was wrong. The rest "should" be correct. I just added the second and last coat of paint to the bottom so I cannot physically see the interior. Unfortunately I was going by invoices and dates...and goofed. Lastly, I hope to have the top painted blue Saturday afternoon...then more pictures...and then the WATER. Again, can't wait.

You can be sure that my Dad will get video, Graham. No worries there. He's quite proud of the boat that he's built.

No need to apologies about the book D's Dad, it's all valueable information, and if there's one thing this lot love, it's information on a craft.... Looking forward to seeing it thrashing the waves....

My Dad is more of a "scale" rc'er. I do believe his plans are to simply get the boat to move at a "scale" speed. Will he ever take it "wide open-full throttle"? I rather doubt it, lol. Nonetheless, it will be cool to see his scratch build project come to life.

No surprise here. The paint dried enough I could turn the boat back over to look inside. The receiver is a Fly-Sky FS-6R3F three channel. I expect I will be masking off the hull tomorrow and painting the top. My main focus today is to finalize the magnetic front hatch so I can get it sealed and eventually painted as well. For now here's a few shots with the bottom done. Looks like I got a pretty good shine to the finish.

As Derek mentioned, my "WOW" factor is when you see a video or picture of one of my efforts and are not sure if it is scale or full size.

Just an update with, most likely, TOO many pictures but here goes. Basically...the boat is done. I just need to get some Velcro to secure the ESC and the receiver.

The cockpit is flat black and the bucket seat is on a track to slide forward and back. And it has a seat belt. Safety first.

I was trying to come up with a way to hide the rare earth magnets holding the front hatch on, as I did not allow for this in the design, when I came across these "buttons". They are metal and thick enough I was able to hold them in my lathe and turn out the backside to hold the magnets. As they are brass(plated) and the prop is brass I thought it would look OK. Looks OK to me.

...not so crowded in the engine compartment. I hope this is of interest and the next time you see it...there will be water around it.

Dad...that boat really turned out great! We'll get the esc and receiver secured and then it's time for the water. Have you done any buoyancy tests yet?
